Jesse couldn't sleep. He couldn't stop thinking about how Sombra got into his room, told him a plan (a bad one at that), and then just up and left. Didn't even explain how the translocation thingy worked. Just told him to get Sam and Ana and take them with him. And if it was a trap, and he suspected as much, then he wasn't about to take Sam in with him and turn the kid over to the witch.
"Never much liked her anyways," he muttered, half convinced to just smash the little device in the morning before they left. But he still didn't feel settled on the idea. He finally sat up, realizing that he wasn't going to sleep at all until he'd made up his mind on it. He shrugged and ran his hands over his face.
"Might's well talk to Ana about it," he sighed, careful not to wake Sam as he got out of bed.
Ana was not asleep. She never slept much anymore, she felt, not since she'd learned Gabriel was still alive. She decided to clean her rifle, in anticipation for the morning. She knew they'd have to fight their way out of Russia, and she wasn't going to let them take anyone so easily.
A light tap on her door broke the near-silence of the house.
"Who is it?" she said, setting her polishing rag down.
"Sorry to disturb you, Ana, but I can't sleep an' I figured I might's well talk to you since you've got something to say in it." She opened the door and let Jesse in.
"Well, what's your problem?"
"This." He held out a small device. "Sombra got in the house, gave me this, said I was to take you and Sam with me through it, and it'd put us on a roadside and we'd go east until we get to an old Overwatch building and we'd meet Gabe and Mercy there."
"And how is an escape plan a problem?"
"It ain't the plan that's the problem. It's the planner that's the problem. I don't like Sombra an' I wouldn't trust her with a dog I liked."
"Well, then you don't have to go."
"Yeah, but I do. The witch knows where we are and she's gonna kill us all tomorrow if we don't leave. But Sombra could be leadin' us straight into a cell for all I know. Which means we're dead either way."
"I'll tell you a secret, Jesse." Ana lowered her voice. "I would trust Sombra with my life if I didn't owe her anything. Do you owe her?"
"Well, no, but-"
"Then I wouldn't expect anything less than a safe translocation to the roadside, which if we follow east, will lead us to an old Overwatch building where we can take shelter."
"But how'd you know if she wasn't trying to trap us?"
"I've seen how she operates. She's not bad, Jesse. She just doesn't help anyone unless it hurts her enemy. And helping you hurts Moira's plans. Of course, we'll have to leave the old building as soon as possible because she will tell Moira eventually where we went. But she is not trying to trap us."
"Yeah but she hates me."
"No she doesn't." Ana stood up and shooed Jesse out of her room. "I'll see you in a few hours. You'd best get some sleep so you can focus tomorrow."
Nobody slept well that night. And when the time came for them to leave, they had just decided to use Sombra's escape plan and were in the process of translocating when Moira suddenly appeared in the middle of the room.
"Everyone go, now!" Zarya yelled, pushing them onto the pads. They disappeared in purple shimmers and Moira tried to go in after them, but Zarya smashed the pads before she could. Moira turned on the Russian and her right hand began to glow a deep purple. At the same time, Zarya seemed to crumple and fold in upon herself.
"Where did they go?" she yelled over the gasps and cries. Zarya did not answer. Moira rolled her eyes and let off. The Russian fell to the floor, and she tried to get up but could not. Moira kicked her.
"Where are they?!"
Zarya whispered something.
"What?"
She repeated herself, no louder.
"Louder!" Moira yelled, kicking her again.
Zarya managed to turn her head and glare up at Moira.
"Get...closer...and I...will tell you," she muttered. Moira leaned down.
"Closer..."
Moira knelt.
"Closer..."
Moira leaned in so far that her ear nearly touched Zarya's face.
Zarya bit her ear, grabbed her right hand, and rolled quickly, pinning the scientist beneath her. She held Moira's hand in both of hers, bending it to its limits. Zarya laid there for a minute, catching her breath, before she finally spoke. As she snapped Moira's wrist, she growled through gritted teeth, "Go $#&% yourself."
