"Oh that was wonderful" Mills jumped out of the truck like everyone else.
"The fire?" Nancy said with a raised brow.
"Yes the fire. It was intense, fun, we saved a bunch of people AND it was a restaurant, so the manager is coming by to drop of some food" Mills smiled as she followed Nancy to the study room.
"Why are you in here? You never come in here" Nancy stared at her as she walked to the bookshelf and took down some books.
"We are having a conversation" Mills smiled and leaned against the shelf with her arms folded.
"About what, exactly?" she sat down at on of the desks and opened the book.
"About how you have a crush on Captain Aiden O'Connor" Mills placed both hand on the table and smiled.
Nancy looked up to her, "Captain? O-Our Captain?" she said in disbelief, "No, no, no, no. She's annoyingly rebellious, immature and..." she trailed off.
"And hot, and sexy, and I best she'd good in b—" Mills started.
"Okay. No. She's Aiden O'Connor... and I'm Nancy Owens, rookie firefighter and she's... Ya know what? I'm not doing this. She is our Captain and it would be inappropriate for us to be in a relationship, so, grab a book and read quietly or back off" Nancy snapped as Mills held her hands up in defense and walked out the room.
"Crush on Captain Aiden O'Connor, who—agh" she groaned.
"Truck 16, Truck 23, Ambulance 14, car accident..." Nancy grunted before slamming her book shut and running out and towards the truck.
The Truck stopped just as they reached the scene, one of the cars were upside down while the van was crashed into the stone barrier on the high way.
"Alright, 16 on van, 23 on car" O'Connor said quickly, looking at Nancy before running to the car.
"Ma'am can you please tell me your name?" O'Connor asked the woman as the rest of truck 16 analyzed the car.
"Um... Crystal. My neck—it really hurts" Crystal told her as she sat upside down with her head up straight.
"Neck brace over here!" O'Connor yelled as Nancy ran over with the brace and handed it to her.
"Okay Crystal, my names Aiden" she told her and strapped her neck, "Can you tell me how this happened?" she asked her, "Go get the jaws, we get this open and we can take her out" she told Nancy as she nodded and ran to the truck.
"Well, I was driving and then this man beside me suddenly crashed into me, my car kept flipping over and then it stopped. Can you please get me out now?" Crystal pleaded with her
"Yes, this is Nancy, she's gonna open the door for you and you've gotta stay still okay?" she told her as Crystal nodded just as Nancy used the jaws to open the door.
"Stretcher" O'Connor said as Nancy and Mills laid it out, O'Connor cut the seat belt and gently pulled her out, laying her on the stretcher as they carried her to the ambulance, "You did good, Crystal!" O'Connor yelled.
"Captain!" Skelton yelled as he motioned to the fire starting at the front of the car.
Aiden saw Skelton trying to get the man's door open, Rosen and Tripp were helping the victim, she noticed the fuel leaking form the bottom of the car as time slowed down.
"Everybody get away from the va--!" she ran to them but was stopped when the van lit up and blasted fire from underneath, sending the four of them back.
O'Connor groaned and stood up, the ringing in her ears getting louder as she ran to Skelton, she grabbed his coat and pulled him away from the fire.
She watched the other fire fighters do the same to Rosen and Tripp. She ran to the victims door and looked in; he was gone.
"Fuck!" she yelled and took off her helmet as the other fire fighters watched her pick up the equipment and throw it in the truck before climbing in.
O'Connor jumped out of the truck and went straight to her office, slamming the door immediately. The rest of the crew stared at the office with their hands in their pockets.
"Guess losing that guy hit her hard, huh?" Nancy looked at the rest of them as they didn't have the same confused expression as she did, but rather sympathetic looks.
"Why'd you become a fire fighter?" Tripp asked her.
"I've always wanted to help people, why?" she laughed.
They all exchanged looks, "Captain is private about her life, but most of us managed to find out a few things. Losing people on the job, for her it's hard. Her family died in a fire and she was the only survivor. It's why she does this job" Mills explained as Nancy looked at them with a slightly shocked expression.
They all walked away leaving Nancy there, she walked towards the Captain's office and knocked on the door, "Yeah" was all she said as she opened the door and stepped inside.
"You okay, Captain?" she asked with a concerned look.
"Yeah. Just part of the job, right?" she smiled and stacked some files together before shoving them on a shelf.
"Sure. Just, you seemed a bit upset last call, I just wanted to make sure—" she was cut off by her Captain.
"I'm fine. It was a tough situation, the leak, and the fire. He's gone now and we need to move on and focus on the next shift" she told her harshly as Nancy nodded.
"See you next shift... Captain" Nancy opened the door and left.
Aiden looked up to the ceiling before punching her wall. People dying is upsetting, but when you know there's something you could have done, it breaks you. It's how she felt, like bit by bit, she was being broken.
