Blowing In The Breeze

Excitement and happiness coursed through my veins. I was so excited to see Minho and Aris again, I ignored the gut-wrenching feeling in my stomach. Currently melting the lock on the train car door to get in, as soon as  I hear the metallic squeak, I impatiently follow Thomas and Newt in to look around. Rows and rows of chairs lined the floor, a lot with unfamiliar faces. Chains hang from the ceiling and wrap around wrists of the prisoners. The kids looked scared, lost, and confused.

"Aris! Hey, you guys okay?" Thomas questioned.

I feel my heart drop to my chest when I hear my brother's name.

"Yeah, we're fine," I hear a small voice reply.

When I get to them, I give a genuine smile and a warm hug.

"I'm so glad you're okay. Jesus, you look awful," I comment.

"He's not here," Thomas' voice shook.

I looked back up to him, then back at Newt before shifting my gaze toward the floor with a sigh.

As kids piled in near Vince to hear him talk, I went down to the beach to think. In the distance, I saw a figure sitting on the sand and looking out into the horizon. Nearing the figure, I smiled a little. The way his hair glows and shines with the sun's rays, and the way he focuses on the bright side of things makes me fall in love with him all over again.

"You know, sometimes I swear you love this spot more than me," I said.

The spot we were at was secluded and hidden behind cattails, weeds, and a giant rock. It was where we picnicked and laid at night looking up at the stars.

Chuckling a bit, he replied, "Not even close."

I sat beside him, laid my head on his shoulder, and stared into the horizon with him.

"What are you thinking?" He asks.

I sigh, "I wish Minho was here."

He nods. "Well, at least we found Aris."

I nodded as well. We stayed in that position for a good five minutes before deciding to head back.

"What if Minho's already dead?"

Newt stops in his tracks and spins me around quickly. He had serious eyes and a look that could kill.

"He's not dead," Newt starts, "He's valuable to WICKED and you know that. Janson doesn't even have the guts to go against Ava Paige's rules, so why would he kill Minho?"

I just shake my head. Newt sighs and leans down to pick something up.

"A wild dandelion," he smiles, "Symbols life, death, rebirth, and most of all, beauty."

Newt moved my hair out of the way and delicately placed the stem of the fragile yellow flower in the crook of my ear.

"Jess, Newt!" I hear in the distance.

I look up to the dock to see someone waving their arms at us. I sigh.

"We better go before they miss us," Newt shrugged and pulled me along with him.

"Here, drink this," Harriet said, handing Aris and Sonya a tankard of water.
