I sat on the edge of the pool, my bare feet dangling into the cool water.
"I can do this," I whispered to myself.
I took a deep breath, closed my eyes and dropped. Obviously, I was only in the shallow side so the water only went up to my waist.
"There you go, Dean. That wasn't so hard," I said, calming my fast-paced breathing.
It had been a long time since I stepped into a pool. As a eighteen year old who can't swim, I was always embarrased to go to the pool even though it's easy enough just to relax in the shallow side. I mean, come on, I'm eighteen! Most people learn to swim when they're like, five.
I took another deep breath, grabbed the large, round float holding it tight, then slowly climbed on top of it. It was nice, just staring at the pool room roof.
"Hey there!" Sebastian called.
He made me jump so much, I accidentally flipped the float, landing in the water. I hadn't realised how far into the deep side I'd floated until I fell. I was freaking out so much I couldn't get myself back up. I was screaming under the deep water, the chlorinated water filling my lungs. I was slipping out of consciousness when I felt two arms wrap around me. Next thing I knew I was back on land, spluttering up the water.
"Dean? Dean are you okay?" Sebastian shouted.
I just lay on the floor panting hard, ignoring the frantic boy shouting in my ear.
"Dean! Talk to me!"
"What?" I croaked, my throat raw from screaming and chlorine.
"We need to get you to the hosipital," he said.
I sat up, rubbing my sore eyes. "I'm fine."
"Dean, you swallowed a load of water, and you almost drowned. I'm taking you to the emergency room."
"Sebastian, back off," I snarled, getting to my feet.
I had to put my arms out to steady myself, my head was pounding.
"Dean, I'm worried. You almost died."
"Sebastian, I'm fine. Leave me alone."
"If you won't let me take you, get Jacob or Lily to take you."
"I don't need to go to the emergency room."
I glared at Sebastian then left the pool room. I stormed across the garden and into the house, dripping water in my wake. I ignored the calls from Lily and Jacob. I ran up the stairs and into the bathroom locking the door behind me.
I lent against the door, coughing violently. My head felt like it was going to explode. It felt worse when someone banged against the bathroom door.
"Occupied," I croaked.
"Dean, it's Jacob. Let me in?"
I ran my fingers through my wet hair, then unlocked the door. Jacob slipped in. I re-locked the door.
"What happened?" He asked. "Your eyes are bloodshot as hell, and you were coughing horribly."
"I almost drowned, that's what happened," I said, walking over to the sink and looking in the mirror.
He wasn't wrong. My eyes were extremely red, and stinging.
"You what?"
"I was lying on that big float, Sebastian made me jump, I fell in the water and freaked out. Sebastian saved me."
I ran the water into the sink, and began washing out my stinging eyes.
"That's why he's wet."
"Yeah."
