Chapter Three: Bridges
Words: 1245

Greek Mythology has always been my escape ever since I was hospitalized: from the tell old tales of The Odyssey to the classic love story between Persephone and Hades. My favorite was The Fall of Icarus. The story starts with a father and his son who had built a labyrinth for a King to hold his (the King's) illegitimate child; a half man half bull. The father and son were trapped onto the island of their own structure so they built wings made of wax and feathers to escape. The son, in a sense of ecstasy, flew too close to the sun, crossing the boundaries between God and man. The son was fascinated with being close with the sun while the father begged him to stay within bounds. The son's wings melted and he fell into the sea, drowning.

I jolted up from the crack of thunder, my eyes widening as the lightning flashed across the early sky, blinding me for a moment. The booming of the thunder sounds too similar to explosions.
I examined the area and realized that I wasn't in the living room anymore. From the school desk in the corner and the shelf of neatly placed CD's, I can only guess I'm in Shinsou's room.

Don't get me wrong, I really am thankful for Shinsou, though it wouldn't hurt for him to be nicer, but I just don't know him. I don't exactly have the best experiences with boys and, to be honest, Shinsou reminds me a lot like Bakugo.

I reached for my phone and it read 7:48 am. I have to be at school at 8:00, at the latest, since the students arrive at 8:25 and I'm technically faculty. I rubbed my eyes and forced myself up swinging my legs over the bed, and walking over to the chair in front of me with my dried clothes.
Changing into my clothes, I folded up the ones that I was wearing earlier and set it neatly on the chair. I made Shinsou's bed as well before sneaking out of the room and tiptoeing down the hallway, the creaking of my footsteps echoing around me.

I approached the living room where Shinsou has his back turned to me, organizing his school bag. I began walking to the door, keeping my head down.

"Are you always this loud?" Shinsou muttered with his back still turned to me.

I ignored him and sighed: "Thank you, for everything. I didn't mean to take your room, I mean, I don't know how I ended up there."

Shinsou glances at me for a moment before slinging his bag over his shoulder and walking past me, heading out the door.
As he was about to leave he stopped and turned his head slightly towards me: "Don't read into it. And...stay here for a few minutes, I'm heading out first."

"What? I'm already late I need to leave," I argued, but he already left me standing there.

He can't tell me what to do, I'm not a child.

I walked after him, shutting the door softly behind me, as to not wake up his parents, and caught up to him since I don't know how to get to the school from here. Around us are UA students, judging from their identifiable uniforms.

"I said wait a few minutes—," Shinsou said but I drowned him out as I realized what he meant. People are staring at us as we both had came out of his house. I could feel my face burning. My eyes then caught Bakugo's, who's on the sidewalk across from us, and he started walking towards us.
Shinsou mutters something to himself and resumes walking. I was about to say something to him but Bakugo has already caught up to me.

"Why the hell were you at his house?" Bakugo asked, clenching his jaw.

"Why does it matter?"

Bakugo just looked at me and scoffed in disbelief: "You're asking why it matters that you spent the night at a guys place?"

I pressed my lips together: "No, I'm asking why it matters to you. We aren't friends, regardless of how much you keep on pushing it. Let's just stay strangers, I'm already over it anyways."

"It" referring to our very non-stranger like history. Of course, I was lying about being over it, though I worked so hard to believe it. I gave him one last look before walking away and followed the crowd of students into UA.
I quickly went to the clinic where grandmother was sitting on her chair. She got up and she gave me a tight hug. I instantly hugged her back.

"I'm so glad you're safe. I got a call from the Shinsou family last night so I wasn't too worried," grandmother beamed.
I smiled nervously. For her sake, I'll keep the alleyway situation a secret for now.

"Right, I was supposed to tell you this yesterday...Class 1A is going on a field trip and they've requested a nurse to be there," grandmother explains handing me a leather bag, which I'm assuming has medical equipment and such.

"I'm not even a nursing student, much less a registered nurse," I say, my eyes widening.

"You'll be fine. You know much more than I ever did as a student. They're in homeroom right now so you have a little bit of time to get to the front campus before they have to board the buses," grandmother assures me.

I nod and hugged her goodbye, heading out the doors. I rummaged through the bag and found a folder of medical documents of Class 1A and a post-it on top of the stack labeled "USJ - Class 1A". USJ? Right, I knew that sounded familiar. Yesterday in the teachers lounge, I heard them mention it. It's short for "Unforeseen Simulation Joint" and it's an off-campus facility.

As I got to the front campus, a bus came to a screeching stop. Soon, Class 1-A came out to campus as well. Their teacher, who I recognize as Eraserhead, approached me. I held my breath.

"Y/N, Recovery Girl told me a lot about you, so I trust that you will be no problem," he says.

"Yeah, for sure," I beamed.

After the students got onto the bus, Aizawa and I got on after, sitting near the front. I hugged my knees and looked out the window. I was soon taken out of my train of thought when someone tapped me on the shoulder.
I looked back to see a pink girl with horns leaning towards me, smiling. Right...Mina. We were childhood friends for a little while until I started cutting people off.

"No way, Y/N? Long time no see, what are you doing here?" Mina asks, "Come sit with me, we're still friends, aren't we?"

If cutting someone off makes them your friend then the bar is low. I don't understand...why isn't she mad at me? I ignored her for years. Nonetheless, I got up and sat down next to her.

"I'm taking a college course so I just need to gain experience as a nurse assistant. I'm just here just in case anyone gets injured," I explain quietly.

"Wow...you're really following your dreams. When we were kids, all you talked about was becoming a nurse," Mina notes, "Your ambition inspired me to apply to UA."

She remembers? I don't understand...
