Chapter Seventeen: Flying Too Close to the Sun
Words: 1358

Grabbing my phone, I quickly excused myself from the police officer and stepped out of earshot from him and Bakugo.
I put the phone to my ear, my heart dropping to my stomach upon hearing his dry laugh on the other end of the line.

I felt myself start to get dizzy but stood my ground. "Shigaraki...you did this, didn't you?"

"You did well," Shigaraki teased, "That wasn't even for you, but congratulations nonetheless. If it wasn't for your defective quirk, that is. I wonder how long it'll take until you're dead."

I felt a tingling feeling expand on my skin as I winced, my heart skipping multiple beats as it rapidly pulsed with cold beads of sweat forming on the back of my neck. My vision went in and out, making my vision distort my surroundings.
I gritted my teeth as I staggered to keep my balance. "Why would you do this? You almost killed a child."

Turning around, I saw Shigaraki standing far away from me, a phone against his ear, putting his hand up, waving slowly.
I glared at his silhouette: "I could turn you in."

"Will you now? I'd like to see you try," Shigaraki chuckles, coughing dryly as he turned away from me, starting to walk off.

"Tell Bakugo you hate him and you never want to see him again. Maybe not in those exact words, but do something."

"And why would I say that?"

I winced as sharp pains came across my body in continuous waves, making me lose my breath.
"Because I said so and if you don't I'll just kill him," Shigaraki says flatly.

My blood ran cold: he isn't bluffing. The line went silent and I turned around to Bakugo, who's talking with the police officer behind me. It looks like he's showing his hero license, I never would have guessed that Class 1-A already had them.

"Back to what I was saying, no hero license no excuses," he resumed his lecture. He went on for a bit but I couldn't focus as a ringing in my ear drowned out his voice. I only heard Bakugo yelling my name before I fell to the ground, immediately going unconscious.

I guess it's true what they say about your life flashing before your eyes when you're on the brink of death. Flashbacks of my childhood came to mind with the song of the music box playing softly. It was of me as a kid, afraid of myself, wondering when the next time my quirk is going to kill me. Imagine being a kid and your fears aren't of clowns or heights, but of yourself.
My memories then flashed to Shinsou, him being my first, unconditional friend. Someone who deserves better than me. And Bakugo, someone who I'm conflicted between seeing him as someone who broke me and someone who built me up.

Then I saw my mom, holding her arms out to me, making me feel at peace before my death with her glistening smile. I began to reach out for her, only to see her disintegrate into ash.

I then heard the sound of a heart monitor, beeping steadily. I couldn't smile, but if I could, I would—I'm alive. That feeling of relief passed quickly, like a speeding train, as I realized that me being alive is worse than being dead.

I managed to open my eyes, my vision blurry at first but became clear as I blinked a few times. I slowly turned my head to my right, seeing Bakugo sleeping in a chair, his spiky blond hair covering his face. Turning my head to my left is Shinsou, also sleeping uncomfortably in his chair, his arms crossed over his chest.

I know what he's doing—Shigaraki, I mean. He wants me to cut off all ties to everyone I care about. But the thing I can't figure out is why. All I know is that if I don't do what he says, they'll all die.
