TIMOTHY
Today is the day I start working. My first real job. No more living off of my parents' illegitimate money and no more feeling guilty about splurging on it. From now on, I earn my own money and I pay my dues. Okay, it was all a little righteous, but I do mean it. I cannot wait to get a real job and actually work for my money. There is absolutely nothing better than that.
Anyways, today is not technically my first day at work because I will be training with a 'senior' for a week before I start my own shifts with another newbie, as I am told. The distance between my place of work - A Subway outlet and my apartment is less than 10 minutes and so I decide to walk instead of taking the car. I walk into the QSR outlet and walk up to the only guy in sight.
"Hey, I was supposed to start training from today?"
"Timothy, right?"
"Welcome aboard, man. Umm, you can look around in the back and all, we will start training as soon as the other newbie joins us. She should be here any minute now."
"She is here!" I hear the voice from behind me that I have come to adore by now and before I can even turn around, I hear her speak again.
"Shit, Tim?" I turn around this time and give her what I can positively assume the most awkward wave/smile ever.
"Hey Josie."
"We're gonna be working together?" she says this looking at the senior guy or whatever.
"Yup. Come on, let's start. Oh and by the way, I am Preston." He smiles at us both – which we return – and flashes his name tag at us. He walks into the kitchen and before I can follow, Josie grabs hold of my arm.
"This is so great!!" She almost squeals, joy clear across her features and I swear my heart jumped out of my chest and took off on a marathon, and probably beat Usain Bolt at it too.
Goddamn, Timothy, you have some imagination!
I agree with my subconscious for a change and smile at the look of happiness – no, ecstasy – on her face.
"I know, we're gonna be hanging out a lot more than school, I guess."
"Okay, let's go in. I don't want to make a bad impression." She claims, then she straightens and smooths her hair over before stepping into the kitchen behind him. On the way, I mess and hair up again and laugh silently at her mock-glare.
"I like the messy you. It's more real." I whisper and ignore the tell-tale blush on her cheeks and go back to hearing what Preston is on about. This is gonna be fun.
