JOSEPHINE
I look at myself in the mirror and check the reflection. The girl in front of me somehow exudes confidence in her mannerism, something she definitely doesn't feel on the inside. I turn to my elementary school best friend – Rowena Montgomery.
"Ro, are you sure this look isn't a bit over the top?"
"No way, babes. I have to admit the school is somewhat like Stonewall Prep from Riverdale, with a major part of the rich and snooty kids going to school together not to actually learn stuff but to find ways to put one another down, but don't worry you look great and it is perfect for the first day." She says, which makes me laugh.
"Well, I sure hope they don't take me in on some secret society shit."
Trust dad to pick out these awfully high-class school for me. Dad is always going out of his way to make sure I get what is the absolute best for me. I know he feels guilty for the past, but that doesn't mean he has to over-pamper me to compensate on the tragedies as well. I sigh audibly.
If only she were here with me, it wouldn't feel as difficult as it does now.
No, Josephine Quinn, do not go there. We do not need that on the first day of school as the new kid.
"Hey, come on, don't get lost in the past again. You know he wants for you only what is in your best interest." She somehow always knows what is going on in my mind.
"Yeah, yeah, I know. Come on now, let's roll." I hear myself say as I check the mirror again. I am sporting a plain white tee topped with an up-turned denim jacket, black and white checked high-waist pants, black boots, with my brown hair tied up in a half-ponytail and my shoulder bag, featuring Sponge Bob and Gang, but of course. I have an obsession with Sponge Bob, since I was 3 years of age when the whole family used to sit down after dinner and watch repeats of the show on TV.

20 minutes later, I am standing in front of my new school.
Raven High School stands proud in its majestic colours of brown and off-white, with students bustling around the parking lot, walking up to the school office, the classes, the friends they haven't seen since the last day of summer break, the usual high school morning bustle. You get the scene. The school looks like something out of a movie or TV Show, and it clearly gives off the rich-kids-school vibe.
I, for one, have pledged to stick to my studies and complete the school year as soon as I can. I do have a whole year at this school ahead of me and with my books, I guess I can pray that time passes by quickly. But with my rotten luck, it's not going to be all flowers and rainbows.
Josephine, you have seen a lot worse than a few irresponsible high-school kids. You got this.
My sub-conscious, for once, backs me up and I take a deep breath before walking to the school office along with Rowena. I get my class schedules and I find that we have two classes together: Mathematics and Psychology; aka, one particularly nasty subject and one particularly my favourite subject, well, one of my favourite subjects. I also notice that my first class today, is AP English – another favourite.
