"Alright!" The homeroom teacher bellowed. "I shall be the homeroom teacher of class 2-3 this year. As you lot know, I teach Japanese literature and since there are no transfer students in this class we shall skip the customary introductions."
She inhaled deeply as her eyes scanned the class and Ume could tell that she too must agree that this whole bunch was a peculiar lot. The teacher continued to give out a few instructions on cleaning duty and student council and the class finally settled down into an uncomfortable lesson full of complicated Japanese sentences and paragraphs.
The lesson ended and people migrated to their friend's desk to get a quick chat in until the next teacher arrived. Ume meanwhile, migrated to the pinboard at the back to check when she had cleaning duties. She was required to do the cleaning every alternate Wednesday along with Matsukawa. She heard a groan coming from beside her to see Oikawa scowling at the pin board. Curious, she looked for his name only to find it on the Monday slot next to social butterfly's name. He was still staring at the list when his head suddenly jerked towards her.
She knew he had realised his beloved Matsukawa was partnered with her. She half expected him to ask to exchange places with him as she returned his heavy stare just as intensely. She herself was not going to put forth the proposition. She wasn't that fond of social butterfly to willingly become partners. Oikawa scoffed at the silent girl before him but did not utter a word. He turned around and returned to his seat.
Lessons commenced again soon after and lunch break rolled around. And it seemed like somebody had dropped a bomb in class 2-3. The social butterfly's best friends had reunited with her. They themselves bought friends they had made in their respective classes. There was a whole swarm of girls talking, giggling and gossiping over their bentos. Ume could hear a faint ringing in her ears from all the noise.
Delinquent kun too seemed to have similar symptoms because he angrily banged a fist on his desk and the girls jumped in fear. But the buzz soon resumed in full swing and delinquent kun's friend had to usher him out of the class to stop him from exploding.
Ume thought it was a wise idea that she ate her lunch as far away from her own classroom as possible. She too slipped out of class after the other two. Apparently many people had similar train of thoughts as her. She soon saw the Sato-Ito couple and the volleyball players escape one after the other.
Every group went it's own way though. The couple found a empty classroom to spend lovey dovey time together. The volleyball players found their other friends and joined them for lunch in their classroom. Ume made it to the playground and settled down for lunch under the comfortable shade of an isolated tree. As for the delinquents, nobody really knew where they went.
Ume tried to return to her classroom as later as she could manage. The class was almost full. But to her surprise many of the girls here were not her classmates and yet they were suspiciously quiet compared to earlier. That is when she heard the shrill voice of social butterfly from the centre of the crowd.
"My! Fujita kun is the sweetest, you know. When we got together over the holidays we went on a bunch of dates. He's an absolute gentleman. He never let's me pay for anything. If I insist he'll say 'I have such a precious girlfriend. A little money spent for her is nothing.'" She let out an obnoxious giggle after that. The rest of the girls cooed at how sweet at it was.
Ume saw an obvious glance cast at Oikawa. Her eyebrows shot up and her eyes darted to the tall brunette with interest. Just last year Ume was sure social butterfly was a blushing mess around Oikawa and had vowed to confess before semester end.
'Oh she had confessed hadn't she? And got rejected on top of that. Wait who was Fujita again? Ah! Soccer team's captain was also surnamed Fujita. Was she trying to make Oikawa jealous? Wait is he jealous?'
She stared intensely at the boy only to be disappointed to find him acting entirely oblivious to the girls. Ume had to consciously try to stop the pout from forming on her lips. She would have had a fantastic time watching Oikawa and Fujita duke it out over social butterfly.
She turned her head to look out of the window to find a distraction only to find delinquent kun's head appear in her vision. He had somehow materialised into his seat without a sound. He still looked angry over the world existing though.
His little friend seemed to have caught Ume's jump scare, however silent it might have been. He snickered wickedly at her. Ume decided she did not like this boy howsoever.
