Thankfully the third years were scared enough to not take matters to the teachers. As to Who had broken the vending machine had become one of Seijoh's unsolvable mysteries.
It so happened that the headmistress's walking stick was found lying besides the machine instead of the metal rod delin- Takahashi kun had used to break it.
When Ume heard the rumours of the aging headmistress apparently practicing jujutsu on the vending machine she gave Takahashi a What-is-this-all-about look. He returned her with a Don't-know-what-you-are-talking-about look. Looking at his oh so innocent face made her give him a You-are-such-a-troublesome-kid look.
Ume noticed that Takahashi, Harada, Kyoutani and Miyamura had gotten pretty close over the next few days. If they came across her during lunch, they'd invite her to join them. Ume would usually accept and play listener to their usual banter.
Over a few lunches, she realised that Takahashi and Harada gave off quite the opposite impressions to their real personalities. Takahashi who wore his usual angry face turned out to be a total softie and a sucker for cats.
He was usually level headed albeit a bit impatient. Ume was pretty surprised to find that delinquent kun was actually quite smart and was one of the top students in class.
Harada on the other hand loved to be present wherever trouble brew. He also had border line anger management issues and needed Takahashi's help to save his ass half of the time.
Though he came off as a bit mischievous, he became venomous if you tried to steal his strawberry milk (Miyamura tried it during one lunch hour, the regret will last a lifetime). He was also a lot more talkative than Takahashi whose major form of communication was a combination of hums, grunts and angry noises.
Ume still refrained from getting too close to them. Maybe she found eating lunch with them every once in a while to be better than her usual solitude. But solitude had been her haven for so long, suddenly leaving it for company was not all that easy.
One day, school had ended and the class was almost half asleep after a long history lesson. They were all lazily packing up to go home when there was commotion in the hallways outside. Ume peeked out of the door at the back-end of the class. She saw many heads poking out just like her to find the source of the noise. The corridors had begun flooding with students eager to get home.
That was when she heard a pesky first year girl talking noisily. "He was a scary looking guy is what he was. He was yelling to call for a Nakamura from year 2 and to tell her that Tendou is here."
With her mouth hung open, Ume felt that she had found the perfect person to practice bitch slapping on.
What was this dude thinking? She packed her remaining stuff in the blink of an eye and sprinted to the ground floor. The first thing that met her eyes was flaming red hair. The boy was loud and strutted around like he owned the place despite wearing a shiratorizawa uniform.
"Tendou!" Ume hissed. "What are you doing here? Ushiwaka better have a good reason for pulling this feat or I'm not letting him off this one!" She angrily snarled.
"Ah! So you're Nakamura! Didn't expect you to be so rabid but whatever." Tendou drawled at her fuming self.
"What did you say?" Ume seethed.
"Okay, sorry! I said sorry alright? And also it's not Wakatoshi kun pulling off this feat...I am." Ume felt her head was about to burst with this reckless boy.
"We need to go to the city training center. It's an emergency." Tendou grabbed Ume's blazer and pulled her along without a care.
Two floors up, from the window of class 2-3 Oikawa watched the two figures sprint across the playgrounds as they got farther away from him. He clicked his tongue in annoyance.
Matsukawa looked at him questioningly wondering what had him upset all of a sudden. Oikawa promptly ignored him. The brunette had been actively trying not to stand out whenever Nakamura was around.
He knew for a fact, if he caught her interest...he'll be seen through. For obvious reasons, he did not fancy the idea much.
Thankfully the girl seemed to avoid volleyball like the plague or not standing out would have been an issue. He thought that the girl preferred keeping her existence to minimum in school. But the sight today had told him that apparently that wasn't the case.
"Tch, how annoying."
