Nakamura Ume POV
I sat leaning on the glass panel of the sliding door in my dear neighbour's backyard. Nishinoya was playing with his volleyball. He was very concentrated in getting the ball up in the air 500 times before dropping it. If I ever knew this was what was coming out of coming to his house I would have stayed at mine.
"You should really stop that and rest Noya, it's your first day of highschool tomorrow." I tried to convince him. Noya grunted to acknowledge he had heard me.
"Karasuno is just around this neighborhood. I don't have to travel for an hour like a certain somebody just to get to school." He reminded me.
I hated having to travel all the way to the other end of city just to get to Seijoh. But I honestly did not take the travel time into account when I decided to attend. It would have been nice to have Noya attend with me though. He was a year younger than me so he was still at Chidoriyama middle school when I was a first year at Seijoh.
"Why enroll at Karasuno though? Just because it's close to here?" I asked the still playing Noya.
"Have you seen their uniforms?" He asked excitedly. " They wear Gakurans! They look so cool in Gakurans! I was honestly tired of wearing those blazers at Chidoriyama. And have you seen the girl's uniforms?! They might be the best in the prefecture if I say so myself." He added thoughtfully.
I smiled and rested my head on the glass panel behind me. My eyes lifted to the orange sky. The night would set in soon. Their were a few crows cawing away in the sky. The evening was uncannily beautiful.
Right, Karasuno. Noya was attending that highschool. Nii-san also went there. I shut my eyes as I remembered his kind smiling eyes. I shake my head to get rid of that image. I reopen my eyes to see Noya has finally let go of the ball and it has come rolling to my feet. I get that he wants me to pass the ball to him but I refuse to touch the cursed thing.
Noya sighed in defeat and came towards me. He picked up the ball but kept standing instead of going back to practice. I look up at him in askance.
"It was Nii-chan who got me into volleyball, you know." Noya said with a slight smile.
"I miss him so much some times." He said sadly. A bitter smile formed on my face. I had not seen my own brother for what now? Two, three years maybe?
"Considering you miss him so much more than he misses you why not go to Tokyo and meet him? Because it definitely doesn't feel like he's likely to come to Sendai any time soon." I sneered.
"Maybe I will!" Noya smiled cheekily."You keep staying here wallowing in plight and I will go and have some awesome time with Nii-chan. We'll set Tokyo on fire!" He pumped his fist into the air.
I laughed at his excitedness. This was why I liked Noya. He wore his heart on his sleeves and never really let anything get to him. He always said what was on his mind and never put on any pretences. Maybe he never really needed to since he was beautiful inside out. Unlike me.
"So Ume..." I raised my eyebrows at Noya. I had told him time and again to use proper honorifics since I was one year his senior. But he never did really. Sometimes I felt like he thought of me more as a little sister than him being the younger one. I did not like it initially. I did not like getting close to people, it always made me uncomfortable.
But Noya never seemed fazed by it. He had somehow managed to make me a friend of his through the years. I was forever grateful that he ever wanted to befriend me. It was not half as bad.
"Ojichan is coming to stay with us for a few days." I sprung to my feet as soon as the words fell on my ears. After all, Noya's grandfather was one hell of a specimen.
When we were younger he had thrown his own grandson into the water and made him flail around for his life till he learned swimming. I was so traumatised by the scene of him throwing bugs at both of our faces to get us to stop being scared of them that I made myself scarce whenever he visited the Nishinoya household.
Noya braved through it though. He was rarely scared of anything now and hardly anything got him nervous. He looked forward to whenever his grandfather visited nowadays.
I glanced at the clock and realised it was almost time for dinner.
"Thanks for the heads up." I got up and patted myself clean. "Make sure you don't get late for your opening ceremony. And put on some extra layers, you just recovered from your cold."Noya nodded in agreement.
" I'll be leaving now." I bowed and left for home. Schools was reopening after the long holiday. I saw my Seijoh uniform hanging by the wall.
It felt like a combination of all kinds of odd things thrown together -The lavender button down shirt, a maroon tie and a checkered khaki skirt. The cream coloured cardigan was optional going with the stark white blazer. Oddly, I have always felt that all these strange items of clothing when bought together...tend to look good.
A slight smile slid onto my face. My school was full of characters milling around in this very uniform. There was never a boring moment. And I make sure to keep myself entertained.
Maybe being a second year at Aoba Johsai won't be so bad afterall.
