Sanyukta's POV
"Sudhir, don't forget to give these number chits to everyone whether faculty or students," I for the umpteenth time told my classmate Sudhir who seemed to be irritated by my continuous rant."Sanyukta, everything is wonderful here. You check other arrangements," he said while arranging the boxes.
It's the farewell today. It's been exactly 20 days since we haven't talked anything other than about this farewell. He has neither cancelled the engagement nor does he talks. I tried a few times but he dismissed me saying he is busy.
I have asked everyone so many times about arrangement and everyone is irritated by me but I can't risk with it. This is the only chance I could get him to talk to me. And if anything will be wrong, then he will be pissed.
"They are coming," Shruti informed us about the arrival of our seniors.
We welcomed them along with the faculty members except him. He was not here and no one had seen him either. He called Sudhir an hour ago to ask about the preparations and also informed that he will be late.
...................................................
"Good Evening, everyone. We welcome you for this beautiful evening we are about to witness. It has been an immense pleasure to have all of you as our seniors. And we tried to arrange today's farewell party according to you all. Hope you will enjoy it.
This is a Masquerade Prom so it is a humble request to please wear your masks. And then before starting I would like you to see the number chits you have and then find your partner for this beautiful evening. Spoiler: It could be anyone in the room, faculties, too. So all the best," the anchor finished.
Everyone in the room scattered and tried to find their partners. But I could not help myself to wonder about his whereabouts."Number 10," a boy asked as he stood in front of me.
"I am sorry. I am not," I said showing my number 9.
"No problem," he said as he went to search for his partner.
.....................................................
"It seems to be a problem to find your partners. So if you want I can call the numbers for you," the anchor offered.
"Number 24," she said while a girl dressed in green saree came.
I was standing alone near the gate trying to get his glimpse, not bothering about my partner who could not find me. And then the anchor called, "Number 9, please", she said while gesturing towards a guy who wore a black suit with a white shirt. He seemed handsome maybe a senior. I thought as I went towards him still looking at the entrance.
My partner sat silently not bothered to even look at me. Seriously, it is his day and he could not even bother to enjoy a bit. It has been two games and he did not participate in any of them. Is he for real?
...................................................
The evening was going to end and I did not enjoy it a bit because of the idiot partner and of course him. He kept playing games on his phone but never bothered to enjoy the party. Everyone had fun with their new partners and here I was sulking because of him and him. When my partner was busy with his phone I kept looking at the entrance to see if he came and tried to look around maybe I'll find him somewhere in the hall but not even a glance. It seems he never came here and won't come because the party was going to end. The only thing left is Last dance and choosing Mr and Ms Farewell.
....................................................
"Let's dance," my partner asked.
But I was way too busy in searching for him so completely ignored his request but next second I found myself on the dance floor.
"Seriously, a minute before you were not bothered to see what was going on here and now you want to dance. Do you have any idea how much time and effort it took for us, your juniors to arrange everything according to your wishes? And I made sure that everything is perfect just to make him happy and he just like you could not bother to come today," I sighed angrily as I saw him who has the mask covering his face.
"Him? Your boyfriend?" he seemed to be curious now while trying to make me dance.
"No, my Fiance and also I am terrible at dancing. So, partner you chose the wrong one to enjoy the evening," I said as I tried to follow him which I should tell I suck.
"Never mind," he said twirling me.
"Your Fiance,.....hmm," he said still gesturing me to follow him.
"You don't need to know," I said avoiding his question. It is my life, my personal life which I don't like sharing with anybody.
"You look gorgeous today," he said in my ears with twinkling eyes.
"Umm...Thanks,...I guess," I said awkwardly because I had never got a compliment from a guy personally especially when the guy is standing dangerously close to me.
The Last Dance got over with my pathetic dancing and we were asked to remove our masks to see our partner, with whom we have spent our evening.
There were a lot of gasps in the room and then I turned to see my partner, it was........him. I can't believe I spent the whole evening with him and I could not identify him. The fault is of his mask which covered his face and as I said before he does not look less than a college student.
I saw him and covered my face embarrassed as I remembered my blabbering.
"Sanyukta, found him?" he questioned with his lips lingering on my ears as he spoke.
"Uhh...Urgh...Yes," I said not looking at him and focusing my attention towards the stage where Mr and Ms Farewell were standing.
"Well, I liked the arrangements and appreciate you for doing it for me," he said clapping as the event ended leaving a smile on everyone's face.
"It was not for you, it was for seniors," I declined his words to save me from further embarrassment even if I know that I have already slipped those words.
He chuckled and did not say anything. He then joined faculty members for dinner and I went to my friends who looked with questioning eyes because I am avoiding them from the day they asked about my engagement. How could I tell them that, Hey girls! you know I am getting married to our Professor Shekhawat without my permission. This was not the answer I would give them.
Both of them were angry and were not ready to listen to me.
"Sorry girls. I know I am avoiding you both from days and I am extremely sorry for not inviting you to my engagement which happened very fast with just family members and........... I will make you meet him as soon as possible," I tried to tell them how sorry I am.
"Promise," Mishti asked hugging me. "And accepted your apology," Shanaya said joining the hug.
"Promise," I replied smiling to them.
