Kayla and Jamie giggled as they told more funny stories the teacher had told them during school that day as they dug small holes in the dirt for the plants. Mark laughed along with them as he also dug a hole in the dirt near them and helped with Kayla's hole.
It was sunny outside for them as birds chirped and the air breezed with warmth around them.
Mark found it very peaceful, especially since the shadow hadn't appeared since he walked out of the house.
Probably having a fit, Mark thought and chuckled.
"What's funny?" Jamie asked, scratching his itchy nose with his dirty glove and made dirt smudge on his face.
"Nothing," Mark answered, chuckling again as he helped get rid of the dirt on Jamie's face.
"Done!" Kayla said, pointing at the complete hole she had dug.
"Good job!" Mark raised his hand for a high five, which she happily did.
He grabbed Kayla's plastic cup with the small plant and carefully took it out. With the plant in his hands, he gently placed it into the hole for her, then grabbed the small knife behind him to open up the big bag of soil.
"Kill them! Kill them! Kill them!" The shadow instantly chanted once his hands touched the knife.
Mark looked at the knife for some time as he felt slightly dizzy and bloody thoughts ran through his mind. He felt tempted to do exactly what the shadow chanted, making him look at the them with same eerie smile he had used in the kitchen. Never had he felt this way before.
Never had he ever wanted to kill his own siblings.
But at that moment, he wanted to do it.
"Yes!" The shadow said, excitedly.
"M-Mark?" Jamie paled as he looked at him with wide eyes.
"Stop!" The unknown voice he heard in the kitchen screamed at him, then vanished.
What is that voice? Mark asked as he snapped out of what the shadow was doing to him.
"Are you okay?" Jamie asked after a moment of Mark staying silent as he thought.
"Yeah," Mark answered, but knew it was one big lie.
I'm not okay, Mark answered it with honesty, never saying it outloud.
Mark never wanted to tell them about the shadow because he didn't want to scare them and make them worry. He wanted them to live their life, happily, healthily and safely. If he did tell them, he knew they would believe him but he didn't want to risk it. He didn't know what the shadow would do if they were to believe him and what would happen afterwards if they were killed.
He would feel lost and lonely without them. It would probably feel like his life wouldn't be worth living for.
"Are you sure?" Jamie asked, worry written across his face.
"I'm sure."
The shadow was quiet the entire time since the voice was heard the second time that day, which made Mark very suspicious of this new voice. But he didn't think much of it as he continued to help them plant the plants with a fake smile on his face while breaking inside.
After helping them place the soil around the plants, Mark got up and picked up two watering cans to water them. He went to the side of his home and turned on the tap, then came back with watering cans filled with water.
Kayla and Jamie patted around their plants, giggling. Mark smiled to himself, happy to see them happy and not dead...by him.
"One day will be that day you will kill them!" The shadow said, brightly.
"Shut up," Mark growled out as he walked to his siblings and sat down on the grass.
Seconds passed and the plants were watered, along with other plants in his backyard. Mark gave them a high five and had began to pick up the small shovels they used to dig up their holes, then put them in his grey garage.
Kayla and Jamie took their gloves off and passed them to Mark who also put them in the garage, as well as his own. Once he stepped out of the darkness of his garage, he saw his siblings patting a dog.
"Look, Mark!" Kayla pointed at the large black dog with her right hand, while patting it's back with her other. "Puppy!"
Mark walked up to dog that wagged it's tail excitedly. He approached it, which made it run up to him and walk in a circle around him, sniffing.
"Kill that dog!" The shadow yelled, happily.
Suddenly, the dog growled and walked back as it barked loudly at him.
"What the hell is that damn thing's problem?" The shadow growled back.
It senses you, Mark answered it.
He tried to slowly walk up to it but found no use, since it barked louder and walked further back.
"Why doesn't the puppy like you?" Jamie asked, backing up a bit from the barking dog.
Mark didn't answer, only looked at the black collar around its neck.
Maybe I could try to get to the collar? Mark wondered. Are it's owners still looking for it?
"Who cares if they are looking for it or not?" The shadow said. "You can just kill it instead!"
No! Mark thought, replying to it. I'm not killing a dog, nor am I going to kill any other being!
"Ugh!" It grumbled, annoyed.
Mark wished the shadow was alive because at the moment, he sure wouldn't hesitate to kill it.
Instantly, the dog stopped barking and ran away, hiding somewhere between the trees in his backyard.
"Damn it!" The shadow spat. "You could've fucken killed it!"
"Shut up!" Mark yelled at it, making Kayla and Jamie visibly flinch.
Not caring what the shadow or his siblings said next, Mark walked inside his house and slammed his bedroom door shut.
