Tears rolled down Mark's mother's face as she ran and held onto Kayla's small hand tightly, wishing for it to end. She blamed herself for everything that had happened, as well as the things that were at the moment roaming the world, making more tears fall down her face.
Why didn't I do anything about it? She thought, regretting the time she saw the first sign and didn't think much of it. If I did something about it, they would be alive and Mark would be fine. We would be still a happy family.
"Mommy!" Kayla suddenly said, snapping her out of her thoughts that she felt were drowning her. "Look!"
She looked ahead and saw Mark walking straight to them with an odd smile on his face. From inside his jacket, he had suddenly pulled out a gun that he raised right at her. She immediately stopped, still holding onto Kayla's hand with fear written across her face.
"Hello, mother," Mark said, excitement reflecting in his eyes as he kept aim at the target he was eager to shoot at the moment.
"D-don't!" His mother instantly put her hands in the air, tears rolling down her cheeks faster.
"Any last words?" Mark asked, unable to think straight with the shadow chanting lightly near his ear.
"I'm so sorry!" She cried.
Kayla stared at the gun with a frightened expression as she slowly walked behind her mother, afraid to be killed by her own brother. She started to cry, but it didn't make Mark think twice of what he was about to do.
"Sorry for what, mother?" Mark asked, holding onto the gun tightly with frustration because he wished to shoot her already, but half of him wanted to stop.
"Everything," She answered as she cried.
"Sorry doesn't fix things," Mark said, watching the sadness and fear showing in her mother's eyes, which nearly made him lower the gun.
"Please don't," His mother begged as Kayla's crying was heard from behind her, also begging for mercy.
No, Mark thought, looking at the gun aimed at them. I can't kill t-them.
"You can kill them!" The shadow yelled, frustrated. "You can!"
"Mark, please don't..." Kayla cried, trembling in fear.
"Kill them! Kill them! Kill them!" The shadow began to chant as Mark started to slowly lower the gun.
Shut up, Mark thought, wanting to kill them already, but also not wanting to kill them.
It didn't stop chanting because it could feel the control fading away, making him think clearly of his actions. His mother and Kayla continued to beg him to spare their lives with tears escaping their eyes. Everything he heard mixed into one, becoming louder and louder, slowly becoming so disoriented, he couldn't stand it no more.
"Shut up!" Mark screamed, silencing them all.
Within an instant, Mark aimed the gun directly at his mother and pulled the trigger.
Her body fell to the ground, bleeding and dying. She started up at the starry sky, feeling only pain. But it didn't make her scream, only made a tear roll down her pale cheek with sadness, wishing it didn't have to end like that.
"Mommy!" Kayla screamed, kneeing beside her mother, crying uncontrollably.
Kayla's cries was the last sound before his mother's sight faded into darkness.
Realising what he had done, Mark dropped to his knees, regretting shooting her. He looked at his mother's dead body, wishing she was still alive, even though all of what had happened. He wanted to cry, but he felt so empty and lost within the control of the shadow and the control of himself.
No, Mark couldn't think straight, so he looked at the silent shadow, glaring daggers at it.
"You fucken piece of murderous shit," Mark said, harshly.
The shadow giggled. "Now, why don't you kill that stupid sister of yours?" It suggested after a moment, staring at the crying girl that sat beside her dead mother.
"No!" Mark snapped as he stood up and went over to Kayla.
But, all of a sudden, police sirens echoed in the distance, making him freeze. He instantly turned around, watching the two police cars speed into the alleyway as he felt the colour vanish from his face. Once the police cars made it in front of him, they stopped. Quickly opening the door, a police officer walked out of the car with a gun in hand, aimed right at Mark.
W-who called the police? Mark wondered, hiding the gun behind his back.
"Put your hands in the air!" The policeman ordered, tone strict and firm.
"Run now, Mark!" The shadow suddenly yelled loudly, startling him. "Run!"
Without a second thought, Mark turned and ran out of the alley, holding the gun tightly.
"Get him!" He heard another policeman yell, making him run faster.
He didn't look back as he ran with long strides, seeming to not loose his breath. Everything was like a blur for him of him running and hearing the shouts and fast paced steps of the policemen that chased him into streets he entered. It was exciting and frighting for him at the same time because he would be put into jail if he were to be caught, or worse: sentenced to death. He could feel they were getting closer, so he turned into another street that was dark and lightless.
Everything around him seemed eerie for an unknown reason as he ran fast, making him wish he didn't enter that street. But the sounds of the same policeman's voice made him continue to run and forget all about it.
Suddenly, the policeman's voice turned into a horrified scream. It only took seconds for the other policeman to let out the same horrified scream.
W-what happened? Mark wondered as he kept running and decided not to stop to investigate.
"Mark! Watch out!" The shadow unexpectedly screamed, but the car was to fast for him to realise.
Bright, white lights of the car was the last thing Mark Hall remembered before it crashed right into him and ended his life.
