A girl, full of numb emotions, lay on the rusted mattress, the stained sheets covering her porcelain skin. She gazed into the darkness, the shadows sickening her mind. Bottles clash, screaming bloody murder. Cries bouncing of the mouldy walls. At the window, dirt covered blinds distorted the lonely moon, peeking down at her.

Sliding out of the squeaky bed, she silently crept across the naked floorboards, to a blood stained door. In the hallway she is enshrouded by pure darkness. Breath held, she crept down the steep narrow stairs. A bash against a wall filled her agonised ear drums. Frozen, she listened for the sound of the monsters within.

Shrieks of demons and bellows of devils erupted in a crescendo from violent tongues. Pain jolted the core of her skull. Something solid smashed against her head. A warm sticky substance trickled onto her high cheekbones from her temple, and over her cracked lips. She heard screaming, but the buzzing in her ears made it seem like it was miles away.

Fight or flight?

She sprinted past derelict images, jumping over unknown obstacles and brushing through the silky strands of spider webs. Leaves scrunched under foot, frosty icicles bite at her already frigid skin. Shivering with fright or cold, what did it matter? Nothing changes, everything stays the same.

Consumed by screeches and roars, a new sound penetrated her reality. Click! Clack! Bang! The neighbourhood screams. Red and blue flashed together in a raging war. Heavy rain screamed in her ears, crying when it greeted the pathway. Staggering to the commotion, she witnessed a fountain of blood pouring out the woman who terrorized her dreams, lay lifeless, outside her prison. The darkness at the back of her mind grows, crowding over her conscience, ruling over her mind, her thoughts came to a halt. She stumbles. Forwards, backwards, forwards, backwards. She crashes to the ground, the heart wrenching impact of her head smashing to the concrete. Blackness grows, then finally, she's gone. The last thing she thought? "I am finally... Free."
