“Hi Matt,” I smiled. I feel like I haven’t talked to him in forever; it just felt good and familiar to be talking to him now. I could see the steam pouring out of the bathroom door from where I stood looking through my drawers for something to wear, telling me that the shower had heated up.
“Hey Lex! For a minute there I thought you forgot all about our phone date.” I rolled my eyes, still smiling. I looked through my shirts and pulled out a plain white shirt and a pair of jean shorts. I paired them with a colorful striped scarf that Matt bought me on one of my last days in New York. It was a simple outfit; it’s not like I was really planning on going anywhere today, but if I did it was cute enough. I laid the clothes out on my bed and then collapsed down next to them. I was so happy to hear the sound of his voice again; I missed it so much. Yes ,it has only been a day since we last talked but it felt like forever. And I hate to admit it, but we were becoming one of those couples that needed to speak to each other everyday in order to function.
“Never. It’s just I just got back to my dorm from Anna’s party. It turned out we all just ended up staying the night there, so I didn’t have time to call you. Sorry babe. Now, I’m about to shower, but I couldn’t wait any longer so I called you.” I got up, grabbing a towel from under the cabinet so I could easily reach it when I got out and glanced at the clock. It was already one thirty. “Wait, what time is it where you are? It must be early! We are, what, five hours later than you.”
“It’s about 8:30.” he laughed.
“In the morning!? What are you doing up?” I asked shocked. He usually would wake up around 10, sometimes 10:30, when we didn’t have to go to school.
“I have a job interview at 9. I was going to get up around six-thirty and then get ready, but I woke up at five and couldn’t fall back asleep. So, I called you because I knew you would be up because of the time difference, but you didn’t answer.” He explained.
“Aww my man is getting himself a job.” I cooed. “Where is the job interview?” I guess Matt was truly serious about trying to get enough money to come fly out and see me. I knew we talked about it, but I didn’t really think he would follow through with it, not that I don’t want to see him because I definitely do. Not being able to see him almost every day was killing me. Sure, we have only really been dating for about two weeks, but we have had been friends for two years before that.
“It’s at Suzie’s. I was so excited when I heard they were hiring, so I applied for a job. It pays much more than the grocery store, but I’m going to continue working there still. Anyway, the more money I make, the sooner I get to see you” He stated.
“Aww. Don’t overwork yourself babe. Make sure you are also having a little down time, I wouldn’t want you to be too tired when we have our Skype dates.”
“Okay.” I could hear the smile in his voice, which made my smile grow wider. “So how was the party last night? What did you do?” He asked. I debated whether to tell him about our little Spin the Bottle game that happened and how Harry and I slept in the same bed together. I was worried he was going to be disappointed in me and break up. He could also react totally different and get mad and that could still end up with him breaking up with me. Or there was always the chance he would be fine with it, but I doubt that would happen.
“Are you still there?” Matt’s voice came through the receiver, interrupting my thoughts.
“Oh yeah, sorry,” I said quickly, “It was fun! We all ended up drinking and swimming. I kind of had a little too much to drink and ended up throwing up all over someone’s shirt.”
“Drinking underage I see.” Matt said in a deep, fatherly tone on the other line. I gave a little laugh, and he joined in. But, I actually didn’t want to drink at all and even though it was things teens my age did, I didn’t want to be one of them. “But seriously, how are you? I hope you’re feeling better now.”
