"She's a good ship, even if she isn't exactly like the old one." Lawg said, fighting a tear as the second Taste-E Ship hummed into the darkness. The Tast-E-2, virtually identical since it has the entire main deck of the first ship crudely stuffed into the second hull, even creaked and moaned like the old ship. The similarity made it almost pointless to even have designated it as a new ship at all, almost like it was just covering plot-holes by allowing unknown new features while not having to do brand new ship blueprints and diagrams. Either way it felt like home.
"We dropped out of stealth-drive or whatever propulsion we use now." Duffy said.
"She's a dream ship, Duffy. Two different Hypo-Distortion drives, one capable of taking off again after landing, for the inevitable time when I forget she cant take-off and land her. Now she can, and she will never again sit grounded like a spoiled teenager who wouldn't eat her vegetables. Now she's truly free." he whispered.
"Great. Did we end up in the right place this time?" Duffy asked.
"Ah yes, the twinkling binary stars of Siggoram Prime, right next to Signus Major and Amazorm Prime." Lawg sighed, lifting a foot to the dashboard to feel powerful.
"None of that is correct, Lawg. We know how to read star charts." said Duffy.
"Some of that had to be accurate." he whined.
"Not a binary star, nowhere near Amazorm."
"Then why are there 2 stars?" he asked.
"Lawg there's..." she paused. "Two stars, both twinkling. Where the hell are we?" she asked the computer.
"Siggoram Prime system."
"Computer...how many stars does Siggoram have?"
"Siggoram Prime, mono-stellar red Dwarf star system, location 227b, 337 alpha. All 3 inhabitable planets, no sentient native life."
"This sector has always been in a lone-star state." Pondered Duffy
"Like Texas." Lawg gasped.
"It used to be gold mining colony until everyone disappeared, presumed dead or mutated. People turned on each other, cannibal behavior, inbreeding."
"Like Texas." Lawg gasped.
"No Lawg, it was a trap. Before they went missing, the colonists reported an alien invasion. Aliens were crossing the border and, awe shit, walked right into that one. Damnit, just say it." she sighed. "Like Texas."
"I don't wanna say now." he pouted as Marley strolled in with a bag of chips.
"Hey guys, We reach Siggoram Prime?
"Either that or Texas, it's got enough stars for either of them." Lawg nodded.
"Hmm, strange. You almost appear to be an adult." Marley sighed.
"For once in ever, he's right. We have a solitary star system with 2 stars. That merits investigating in itself, even if the unclaimed territory is tapped out of gold. There may be a reason for all the ghost stories."
"Sounds like a job for...anyone but us." Lawg said, turning the wheel.
"Lawg, stop it. You're an idiot and a coward." Duffy scolded. "Plus we have that shipment of military guns if anything bad happens. I know the idea was to sell them for profit but we may make more in this salvage than the guns, and when it's over we can still sell the guns." She informed.
