Maddie's POV
"Justice, Carl, is this real?" I ask, my throat swelling up and my stomach tying into a big knot. "This has to be some kind of joke." Justice looks and Mrs. Pacaldo and says,"This is just a joke, right?"
"Okay. Kids, I need to escort you onto the school buses out front. We will bring you to a shelter where you will meet up with your parents." Mrs. Pacaldo says strenly.
But I know better.
"We need to get out of here and get back to our houses, our families are probably there!" Carl says to Justice and me as the other kids follow Mrs. Pacaldo down the hall.
"Okay, let's just get out of here as quick as possible. No questions asked."I agree as Carl grabs our hands and begins running fast.
We run through the dark blue double doors in the hallway to outside. We run until' we see one of the things the reporter told us about.
It starts limply attempting to run towards us, but we race past it and head away from the school and through the woods so we can take a quicker route to get into the neighborhood where we live. But one of the human/like things startles me and I fall on it. The jaws of it clench open and I try to push it off of me.
Carl pulls it off of me and we begin running again.
A herd of the things that we now call 'Walkers'(Carl came up with it) is slowly creeping up on us.
"Come on, this way!" Carl runs and we trail after him, seeing a few houses about 50 feet away through the trees.
"We need to go to our houses." I say, running quicker.
'My family is still alive,' I tell myself, quickly dashing across the streets.
