We feared you, and hoped you gone
You selfish spirit
And yet we sailors find ourselves
capsized and breathing with heads below water
I purge myself of your tendrils,
the ones I thought I could tame and teach to caress my need for a home I could hold
And he remains tightly wound to driftwood by lurking tether and unwavering loyalty
We both have our affliction to the beast
We both believed him to be our friendWhat we forgot is that beasts like him do not make friends
Instead meet those unwilling to name him enemy
And what I forgot is that the beast does not know the dance of the leatherback turtle
Only answers the unheeded call of the siren and her seemingly warm watersIn the end we both drown and even the beast is eaten alive
