I manage to survive in Mary Jane's small navy blue dress that isn't all that bad, suiting my exact comfort zone that doesn't include jeans or sweatpants.

"See? I knew you'd like it."

I chuckle when I see her eyes dart down to my black boots that contrasts the feminine dress. She shakes her head.

"You know what? Whatever, it still looks quite good."

She has gone with the lighter option, the exact opposite of mine. Her skinny white dress makes her bright red hair stand out like a lit candle.

"Come on, we should go." She says.

"Alright," walking past a mirror I glance over to it for the first time. "My brown hair looks kind of orange with this dress."

"That's just lighting, sweetheart. Besides," she begins again. "You don't need to worry. I'm a genius." She turns to wink at me. I catch up to her and playfully nudge her with my shoulder as we get into her roofless car.

After five minutes, she says, "I've missed this. I'm glad we're going out again."
It feels like guilt just punched me in the stomach.

"Yeah. I'm sorry, about that. Things were, uh... I was busy."

...

Walking in the already open door, music has already filled the air and so has the smell of food.

"Flash!" M.J squeals, running deeper into the house and swinging her arms around his neck in an embrace. I follow awkwardly, pushing into the crowd until I found where they went. M.J catches my eyes wandering.

"Meredith!" she calls out to me and introduces me to a few people she knows.

"Meredith, this is Renee. And Josh and Tyler..." I greet all of them along with a few others that seem to have come up to me while I'm getting myself a drink, telling them all that I do in fact go to Midtown High whenever they asked.

After twenty minutes, I already find myself heading outside and to the back porch. I have given up on hanging around M.J—and Cassie, who has shown up—sitting on the living room couch. I told them that I just felt like I needed some air and went outside.
Sitting on the patio steps, I exhale in relief to be a bit away from constant conversation all around me.

A group of friends sit on a table in the backyard and a few other people I recognize from school stand in front of me. Taking a sip from my can of coke, I reach for my phone to check my messages before somebody thumps down heavily and sits beside me. I look up to see that it's Jack. Oh, great.

"Meredith." He says. "I have been looking for you everywhere."

"You have?"
I snort.

"Mmhm." He grins.

"Yeah. Look, I just want to be here by myself for a little bit."

"I found you." He continues, smirking in a smug, triumphant way.

Double great. He's drunk.

"Yay! You found me! Woo-hoo... Now go." I might have fun with this.

"But are you going to deny me the honor of buying the most beautiful girl here a drink?"

"Yeah, I am."

His eyes shift to the can of coke in my hands and he smiles again. "Is that a real drink?" He asks stupidly, his eyes falling to my lips.

"Look, I'm not interested." I'm kind of done with this now.
