After lunch and long day of avoiding Mr. Daily's calls, I headed back to my room. The sun had gone down but it was still light enough for me to get to my mother's. I'd already called and told her that I was on the way. My day hadn't gone according plan but there was always tomorrow. I'd never been much of an optimistic person but in times like this, I really didn't have a choice. I grabbed some things from my room and decided that I needed to get on highway. Part of me felt like I was leaving my room to escape August and his antics tonight. As I drove, I watched the trees passes in speeding bulk. There weren't too many cars out which was shocking because there was always a ton of traffic out towards this direction. But the peaceful feeling that was over me right now didn't last long due to my phone ringing in my cup holder.
While steering, I looked down at it seeing that it was Mr. Daily once more. I decided that I should get the call over with, I picked up and slid the bar over placing the phone to my ear.
"Mr. Daily. Hey." I tried to put a little bit of up beat to my voice.
"Don't, I have been calling you all day. I assume you know that already. So, I'm going to cut to the chase. The board is coming in sooner rather than later. Which means I need your story by Friday." He sighed.
Apparently this wasn't his decision but he had no choice. The Board always made choices based on what they wanted to do and when they wanted to do it.
"About that, I-I um-"
"Lafayette, if it's bad news keep it. I don't want to hear it. Friday. If I have no story from you by then, I wouldn't worry about coming back to work if I were you." His attitude towards the situation was more harsh than before.
It was as if he'd given up on me and it hadn't even been a while two weeks yet.
"I thought I had two weeks Daily! You-"
"I don't make the rules Amina! Look I'm sorry but something has to give. Now you have until Friday, make it work." He hung up.
No goodbye. No cat, dog... nothing. I'm sure it was stupid for me to think that he would have been a little bit more understanding. Considering my situation but you learn something new about people everyday. Was it wrong to think that he should have been more lenient towards the situation? Maybe. But I didn't care. I'd been there for five years and I'd worked my ass off and now here I was about to lose my job.
No it wasn't fair.
Brushing it off, I turned into my mothers drive way. Her cherry red Nissan Altima occupied the spot before mine. I never understood why she purchased this car, she never drove it. I pulled it behind her and shut the engine. How was I supposed to tell her what was going on? She would be disappointed by me and I never wanted to do that. Moving to New York was supposed to be successful move.
My right hand gripped the gear shift that sat by the console. I tapped my for finger against the button on the top. I told my mother almost everything that went on in my life but how was I going to tell her this? I ran my fingers through my hair, sighed before reaching over to open the door. Once my boot hit the pavement, I closed my door and decided that I was going to have to get this over with. At least she would know the truth.
Taking two steps at a time, I reached for the storm door and opened it. The house was lit up but nobody was in the den. The smell that flowed throughout the house was amazing. It smelled very... Italian. My brows furrowed and I made my way to the kitchen.
"Ma!" I yelled as I walked down the hallway.
Nothing, but what I did hear was voices. I heard laughter. At first it caught me off guard considering the last time I heard these types of sounds was when my father was alive.
