Skipper P.O.V
After selling that day, I stand on a street corner with Davey, Jack, and Les. Davey has one last paper, and Les takes it, walking up to a woman. We hide, watching. He fake coughs, asking her about buying a paper to support the sick.
"Oh you poor dear! Of course I'll buy a newspaper! Here's a dime." And she takes the paper, disappearing. Jack tussles his hair, laughing. "Kid's a natural!". Davey rolls his eyes. "We should be going. Our folks will be waiting with dinner." Jack leans on a beam. "Ya' got folks?" Les speaks up. "Doesn't everyone?" Jack just looks at the ground, muttering. "Maybe not alive."
Davey walks over. "Why don't you come over for dinner? We'd be glad to have you!" Les hops over. "Yeah, and Mom's a great cook!" Jack backs away towards me, shaking his head."I'd love to, but uhh... Skipper and I got someone we gotta meet. Right?" He playfully elbows my arm. "Oh... right!" He smiles.
Les looks up at the fire escape above. "Is that the guy you're meetin'?" Jack looks up, and curses. "Run!" He grabs my hand, pulling me up the fire escape with Davey and Les in tow. I hear the man shout "Kelly!!" as we run, but shut it out, following Jack.
We end up in the balcony of a theatre, panting heavily. "Can someone tell me why I'm running?!? Who was that guy?" Davey exclaims. "They call him Snyder the spider, he runs a jail for kids called the refuge. More kids he catches, the more the city pays him. Only problem is that all the money goes into his own pocket!" Jack yells, obviously drawing attention.
"Hey! You shoo! No kids allowed in my theatre!" A shrill voice scolds. Jack leans on the railing. "Not even me, Miss Medda?" She smiles. "Jack Kelly, you get yourself down here and give me a hug!" Medda says excitedly. Jack hugs her, earning a laugh. "Where ya' been, kid?" She says. "Never too far from you, Miss Medda!". He turns to us. "This here is Medda Larken, the finest performer this side of the country!" Jack says proudly.
Davey bows. "An honor, miss.". I do a small bow. "Nice to meet you.". She looks at me. "A girl? Jack Kelly, are you tryin' to replace the last one?" I see his face straighten, and he walks out calmly.
What'd Medda say wrong?
