Requested by @Oulaladepp - Gilbert doesn't think about himself, he's selfless. But from time to time it's important to think of yourself. Y/N caught his eyes and he managed to ask her out. They've been dating for 6 months now but he hasn't been paying much attention to his girlfriend.

Y/N-
"This is Gilbert's phone leave a message" the annoying beep noise happened and I immediately hung up.
'He's always so busy, has he forgot about me?' I thought looking at the wall full of polaroid pictures of Gilbert and I and even Arnie.
Gilbert has been working harder than usual to help pay for his family's expenses.
'I'll just drive by his house maybe he'll answer then' I thought as I grabbed my keys and locked the door.
Gilbert's house was about five minutes away from my house by car so we sometimes walk around together in the fields.
I quickly got to his house and his car was outside.
I knocked on the door and a few minutes later his older sister, Amy, opened up.
"Hey Y/N, what's up?" She asked letting me inside.
"Gilbert's not answering his phone and I haven't seen him for a while so I thought to stop by to see what's up" I said and she just nodded.
"I think he might be upstairs with Arnie" she said and I thanked her.
I walked upstairs and heard Arnie laugh and Gilbert speak but I couldn't quite make out what they were saying. There were loud footsteps that went further and further from Arnie's room.
I knocked on the door to the bedroom and Arnie quickly answered it.
"Y/N!!!" He yelled and hugged me.
Arnie was a good kid and I loved him, he's special but it didn't matter.
"Hey Arnie, how are you?" I asked pulling away and started entering the room only to not find Gilbert anywhere.
"I'm very good, Gilbert has been very tired so we play less lately" he said disappointed.
"Arnie, where is Gilbert?" I asked causing Arnie to turn from his toys and point to the wall meaning that he's in his room.
"Thanks, I'll see you later sweetie" I said leaving the room and quickly making my way to Gilbert's room.
I knocked on the door only to hear Gilbert groan.
"I said, give me half an hour to sleep a little Arnie, I'm tired" I heard Gilbert say loudly from behind the door and I opened it and look at Gilbert laying face down on his bed and a part of the blanket covering him.
I closed the door quietly and made my way next to his bed trying to be as quiet as possible. I sat next to him on the bed and that's when he finally turned. His eyes were slightly red due to the lack of sleep and his body seemed weak.
"Y/N, hey, what're you doing here?" He asked and I started to play with his hair.
"I missed my boyfriend, I haven't seen you in a week" I said and he turned around and laid on his back.
"I'm sorry I wasn't around lately. I started working double shift to make extra and I have been taking care of Arnie" He said rubbing his eyes.
"You seem exhausted, how much have you slept lately?" I asked and he looked up at me with a soft smile.
"I don't know, not much. I'm really sorry that I haven't been around, I just need to help them and it's taking a lot out of me" he said with a small chuckle.
"You know if you ever need help you can just ask"
"I know but I don't want to be a burden on you, I just, I just don't want my problems to become yours" he said closing his eyes enjoying the feelings of my hands going through his hair.
"You will never be a burden and I will be more than happy to help you guys, I can always help with Arnie, I love him and you, so don't worry about that" I said and he began drifting into sleep but was fighting to pay attention to me.
I kicked my shoes off and slid into bed next to him and he quickly laid his head on my chest letting me just hold him and kiss his head and face.
"I love you and will always help" I whispered in his ear even though he was sound asleep.
My eyes became tired and slowly closed as well, drowning me into sleep.
*a slight time skip*
I was startled awake by Arnie bursting into the room making me slightly jump and waking Gilbert up as well.
"I scared you didn't I?" Arnie asked with his adorable laugh.
"You really did Arnie, did you see me I jumped" I said laughing along with him and Gilbert finally lifted his face from the crock of my neck to look at me.
"Good morning" he said trying to hide the tiredness in his eyes.
"Actually it's more of a good night" I said looking at the clock that he had next to his bed.
We heard Arnie laugh and I saw him trying my shoes on and laughed as well.
Gilbert turned to look at what Arnie was doing and quickly joined with his own laughter.
"Silly goose, give me my shoes back" I said and faked an upset face.
Arnie stood there shaking his head no and then began running down the hall.
"I should probably help make dinner" I heard Gilbert say.
"You know what, no, no you're not going to do that. You're going to sit with your sibling and rest while I make dinner" I said getting up and beginning to walk to the door.
"You shouldn't do that it's not your house" he exclaimed.
"I wasn't asking Gilbert, I think that it'll do you good to rest for awhile, you've been working yourself way to hard and I don't want you to over exhaust yourself again" I said walking down the hall and into the kitchen without another word.
I started cooking dinner and I told all of the Grapes to just sit around and rest.
I was done cooking after about 20 minutes and called everyone to the table. Everyone ate and made conversations.
After dinner I washed the dishes while Gilbert helped Arnie shower and the girls were getting ready to go to bed.
The house became quiet with everyone asleep except Gilbert and I.
"Thank you for today and understanding" he said coming down to the kitchen.
"It's not sweat, I love you and you can always call me and ask me for help" I said coming up to him and hugging him.
He was like a big teddy bear when he was hugging me and I loved it.
"Would you stay the night? Only if you're free" he asked kissing the tip of my nose.
"Sure, I don't have work until later in the day so I can help a little tomorrow morning" I said and he hugged me again.
"Thank you, I promise to not be so distant any more" he said and I just looked at him with a smile before kissing him on the lips.
"I missed that for the past week" he said pulling away after a few moments.
I laughed and we headed upstairs to his room.
He took a quick shower while I stole one of his oversized t-shirt and basketball pants.
"You wanna shower beautiful?" I heard Gilbert ask coming behind me and rapping his hands around my torso and hugging me.
"I showered in the morning so I'll just shower tomorrow" I said turning around getting a perfect view of Gilbert in only a towel.
He grabbed his pants and got dressed and ready for bed.
I was already under the covers when he came out of the bathroom after brushing his teeth.
"You seem ready to go to sleep" he said slightly laughing and I just smiled at him like an idiot.
He got under the covers as well and I let him cuddle up to me.
His head was resting in the crock of my neck and one of his arms was rapped around my stomach.
"I love you" he said kissing me once on the neck and once on the cheek.
"I love you too, go to sleep, you need it" and with that he closed his eyes and his breathing became even.
I slowly drifted off as well thinking of how much he has a connection to his family.
'One day, you'll be an amazing father'
