The Van Russells-Classic Family
At the mansion that is the home of Marty, his wife Jennifer, and their two daughters Daphne and Elayne. The four are sitting in the breakfast room at the table and eating while not making a sound. It's quite eerie. Daphne sips her orange juice and looks at her father.
"Dad, I need an intern this semester. I was thinking I could work down at Van Russells, with you."
He beamed a bright smile at her, because that is all he ever wanted, for his offspring to have an interest in the family business. "Of course dear, why work anywhere else."
Elayne rolled her eyes at her.
"I hear you have a big announcement to make. Care to share?" Daphne asked.
"Daph, I don't discuss business at home."
"But Dad, this will be huge for Van Russell stores. This is the type of expansion we need at just the right time."
Elayne rolls her eyes again.
"So, how do you know so much about this deal?" Marty asked his oldest daughter.
"Jessica Scoville has an International Business class with me. She was bragging about it."
Marty hated leaking his business, especially when it was family doing the yapping. Though he loved his daughter, his business was not her business.
"Isn't Jessica that snooty snot that would not give you the time of day in high school?" Elayne asked.
Daphne shrugged. "We're friends now."
"Yeah, I bet," Elayne mumbled, scooping up a forkful of egg whites.
"I hope you are taking some time to have fun in college instead of constantly stressing about grades and studying and work and-" Jennifer started.
"Jen, that's what school is for. Daphne, you're doing fine," Marty told her.
"I'm just concerned that the girl will never find a suitable husband nor keep her appearance...approachable if she continues-"
"Mother, please!" Daphne groaned, dropping her napkin. "If you think I'm in school to meet a boy? Well, you don't even know me. I'm not you!"
Jennifer looked at her daughter with disdain. She wasn't thin or looked like a Barbie doll with bought and paid for body parts.
"Obviously you're not."
Daphne jumped up from the table, her face red with rage.
"I'm going to my room."
Daphne walked off and everyone sat there quietly till they heard her door slam.
"Jen, you really ought to watch what you say to your daughter. She's a good kid and she's going to be a great asset to the company in a few years."
Jennifer ignored him and turned to Elayne.
"How was the party?"
"Great! Except that Chrissy left me there."
"You two argue?" Marty asked.
Elayne shrugged. "I think she's upset that the guy she likes, likes me."
"I don't like it when my daughter and niece fight over a boy. You two are best friends."
"I know daddy, but-"
"And whatever issues you have, work them out, you're family."
Elayne stopped chewing her food and dropped her fork. That was true. Chrissy had always been there for her. They shared everything. Clothes, shoes, homework. She just did not want to share Tony.
