I turn around from my spot in the passenger seat of my older brother's car to smile at my daughter in the back seat. She's asleep with her head leaning against the window and hugging her favourite stuffed animal close to her chest, a kitten called Bean that was a gift from her uncle for her last birthday.
"Are you excited to see mom and dad again Paris?" My brother's voice startles me so I shoot him a playful glare as I turn around.
"I don't know if coming home was the best idea Dallas. They practically disowned me the last time I was here." I sink down in my seat as the memories come flooding back of how my parents treated me after they found out about my secret.
"No! I will not allow this to happen to you Paris Cara Evans. No child of mine will commit such a sin under my roof." My mother screams at me from her seat on the other side of the coffee table.
I look over to where my brother Dallas is standing in the doorway with my younger sister Adelaide and my six-month-old daughter Luna. He gives me a supportive smile before walking into the room and sitting next to me, carrying Luna and setting her down gently in my lap.
"Mom, I don't care about your opinion. This isn't something I can change, it's who I am and that will never change. Not for you. Not for anyone." I try to keep my composure but I can feel the tears in my eyes threatening to fall and I think Luna can sense it too as she reaches up and rests her tiny hand on my cheek.
"Don't talk to your mother like that, Paris. She has been lenient enough with you making all these mistakes and staining our family's pristine reputation." My father seems to be angry. No, I've seen him angry before and it wasn't like this. He's furious. His face is red and contorted with the rage he's feeling towards me.
"My daughter isn't a mistake. She's the best thing that's ever happened to me. Just admit that if it was Adelaide that went on a date with the mayor's daughter you wouldn't care. I'm just the problematic middle child that constantly makes mistakes and embarrasses you in front of all your colleagues and investors." I snap at my parents before I stand and go to leave the room.
Unfortunately, my mother is closer to the door than I am and she leaps from her seat to block the exit. I try to go around her but she moves every time I do, copying my motions and blocking any chance I have of getting away from the uncomfortable atmosphere in the room.
"Mother, I'm seriously not interested in carrying on this conversation with you. Just let me leave. Please. I'm trying to avoid a fight here."
"I'm your mother Paris, I say when you can leave."
"I'm not a child anymore, you can't control me. I'm 20 years old."
"You still live under my roof so you need to follow my rules."
"Maybe I'll move out then I won't be under your roof anymore."
"Don't get too excited, you have a baby, you don't have a job and you don't have anywhere to live Paris. You're not leaving any time soon."
"She can stay with me mom. Then neither of us have an excuse to be here anymore. Sorry Addie." Dallas involves himself in the situation for the first time and I turn to smile at my brother, completely grateful that he jumped in to support me right when I needed him to.
"Really Dallas? You want this thing in your house with your girlfriend? I understand to a point if it was just your sister but the other thing shouldn't be there." My father speaks up, ruining my good mood just as quickly as it started.
"That thing you're talking about is my niece and your granddaughter. How dare you say those things about a child, especially your own flesh and blood?" Dallas defends me straight away, placing a comforting hand on my shoulder as he starts to lead me from the room. "If you'll excuse us, we're going now."
Dallas leads me and Luna past my mother and Adelaide, who smiles as she sees us leaving.
