Returning home would be daunting enough if I had simply been away for six years, but knowing that the last time I saw my parents and Adelaide wasn't a good experience only makes the wound sting a little more.
Luna doesn't deserve the life that I've given to her since I left my home but I know it would've been much worse if I remained here. This town and my family was a toxic environment for me to grow up in and I stand by my decision to leave since I would never allow a child of mine to experience the same things that I did.
My gaze is drawn to my hand and I begin to fiddle with the ring on my finger, my mind drawn to the man who gave it to me. I picture his dark hair and piercing green eyes as I think of all the moments that I have shared with him over the past three years. He has been an incredible father figure to Luna and a wonderful boyfriend to me since he entered our lives.
The ringing of my phone causes me to snap out of my thoughts as I look to the screen which displays Jake's name over my background, a photo of the two of us on the night that he proposed.
"Hi Angel, how's being home?" Hearing Jake's voice calms my nerves that are slowly growing in the pit of my stomach as we near my parents' home.
"Honestly?" I can hear my voice shaking as I speak to my fiancé, no matter how much I try to control it. "I'm terrified they'll kick me out again, or say something to Luna. If they say something about my daughter they won't be able to say anything else." The words scare me, even as they leave my mouth. They sound foreign as they fall from my tongue and I can hear Jake sigh nervously once I speak.
"Just make sure you go in with a clear head so you don't end up saying or doing anything you'll regret later." Jake's words make sense to me but I'm still scared that I'll end up ignoring them and yelling at my parents as soon as they say something that I don't like. "I have to go now but I'll see you soon Angel."
His words confuse me but, before I have a chance to question him, he puts down the phone on me. I look at Dallas but he's already looking in my direction with his hand covering his mouth, a less than inconspicuous effort of hiding his laughter.
A sudden movement in front of the car catches my attention as I finally recognise where we are, my parents' home. The movement was Adelaide opening the door and my breath catches in my throat as I look at my sister, no longer the seventeen-year-old that I left here six years ago, with a woman who is just as familiar to me as my own sister - even after all this time - walking behind her down the stairs with their hands clasped tightly together and diamond rings on each of their fingers. Veronica Ashton - the girl I dated six years ago who told her parents everything about our secret relationship and lead to my being disowned by my family.
