J. Edgar Hoover Building, Washington DC (Years ago)
Munching on a bagel I continued my work seated at my cubicle while my colleagues rushed around me. It is official : leader of the Russian opposition Sergei Volodin has disappeared. My uncle Vladmir called me last night to ask for my help to locate and protect Volodin but it's out of the FBI's jurisdiction, and more leaning towards CIA territory. I haven't told Ryan about this but I doubt that he is willing to assign me on the job. "Morning Isa." Andy suddenly appeared beside me. "Still working on the case?"
"That guy followed me last night." I replied, turning my swivel chair around. "Judging from his actions he's onto me, he suspects that I'm with the FBI."
"Boo, seriously." Andy said. "Your childhood friend becomes a creepy stalker of the night." I glared at him in silence. "You heard about the Volodin disappearance right?"
"My Russian guy called me last night." I said. "He told me that Volodin just-" I snapped my fingers, finishing the sentence.
"He's Russian, theoretically he would've known it earlier than us." Andy replied. "He's not our average Russian guy right?"
"My uncle, former KGB." I whispered. "One of the few good Russians."
"For me KGB is hardly a good one." he said. "Disappearing dissidents is their main thing after all, like NKVD and shit."
"Don't forget the Gestapo." I said. "Uncle William and Uncle Roland aren't too fond of the secret police either."
"For one the CIA is already hyping up to play the blame game." Andy said. "And we see the FSB vs the CIA."
"The SVR could be bouncing on their toes." I pointed my pen. "We handle the FSB, while CIA handles-"
"Stark! Duncan! In my office." came shouting Ryan Carey, the Assistant Director of the Counterintelligence Division, technically, our boss.
"The SVR." I finished the sentence. "Let's go." Andy nodded and we entered Ryan's office. We sat at the chairs while Ryan finishes his call.
"The SVR is Russian foreign intelligence no?" he asked me.
"Russian's version of the CIA." I reaffirmed. "Are you even paying attention during briefings?"
"When you have a former KGB guy as your ally those CIA guys might need to think twice."
"I think the CIA could be thinking that why an FBI agent has been in contact with a Russian and is a former KGB agent to boot."
"But she's not R. Hanssen."
"You shouldn't mention the name that is still a stain on the FBI image." I said.
"Pack your bags agents." Ryan said, putting down his phone. "You're going to Gotham City."
"Uh... why?" Duncan asked while my expressions turned sour.
"We discovered several crates of weapons due to be shipped out to Afghanistan."
"No connection there." Duncan said.
"Bread crumb trails led us to one of the major companies in Gotham." Ryan said. "Wayne Enterprises."
"Hell, no." Andy groaned. "Since that incident in London I have declared him persona non grata."
"What about you Black Bird?" Ryan looked at me.
"The sooner we solve this nutcase the better." I said.
"Good." Ryan said. "I've contacted the local authorities. I also need to talk to you both."
