the next few days passed impossibly slow. Draco hadn't spoken to me, why should i try to speak to him. His eyes would dart in the opposite direction when i passed him in the halls. Potions class was painfully awkward. I would try to distract myself in anyway possible, draco did the same. The silence was unnerving. I found myself lying awake in the dorm room almost every night. As my eyes would flutter shut, i would play the scenario from the common room over and over again and would be snapped awake. My heart quickened as i imagined his cool touch against my cheek. I was still confused as to what had happened that night. Maybe i had imagined it, i told myself. Maybe he meant nothing by it at all, but the look on his face when we caught eachothers eyes from across the class room told me that could not be true.
Hermione and i woke up early one morning to study in the library. It was a misty November morning, the dormitory windows were fogged over with ice, and the room had a certain chill to it. I met her in the common room at about 10 o clock and we made our way over to the library. Once we arrived we situated ourselves on a table in the far corner, were the librarian madam pince could not hear or see us. We got to work pretty quickly, exam season was in full swing and seeing as it was my first year i felt a certain pressure to perform well. Other students began to file in and take there seats around the room as the morning went on. For the first time in the past week, i wasn't thinking about what had happened with draco. I was focused, perhaps distracted is a more appropriate word. Hermione noticed the rare look of serenity on my face. "Someone's happy this morning," she said smiling at me questionably, not knowing how to respond i simply returned the smile back to her. She was right, i was happy. What happened with draco was a mistake. Mistakes happen. Life moves on. In a few weeks this will be nothing more then a distant memory-
"excuse me..." I snapped my head up sharply, and to my horror, the very last person i wanted to see was staring down at me. Draco Malfoy. I looked at draco, and then back at hermione, a suspicious look was growing on her face. I opened my mouth to say something but i couldn't form any words. "Sylvi- um i mean james...i need to speak to you." Hermione looked at him cautiously, "Draco if this is a windup i swear i'll..." "Hermione it's okay," i said calmly, gently placing my hand on her arm. I looked up at draco, his gaze fixed dead on me. "Just some potions project," i said turning to her, flashing her a weak smile. "Ill be back in a minute," i whispered, Before standing up from my chair and following draco to a row of book shelves out of hermiones view. Great i thought to myself, just great.
