Thought of the chapter :-
With every new day comes new strength and new thoughts.-x-
EMMA
Amidst hushed conversations, glances, glares and whispers, I start a fresh day with lots of spirit and a lot more hope. I submitted all the pending files but there's still so much to be done.
Mikey and Ana are finally returning tomorrow after their a-little-too-long vacation. So, I plan to take the day off tomorrow after lunch to fix them a proper dinner and fill in the gaps of the days that went by.
After I finish the last folder for the day, I look around and find the office nearly deserted. Checking my wrist, I realise that it's already seven. Damn! I was so immersed in work that I completely lost track of time.
Just when I put my things and get going, I remember that I had to talk to Steven about taking the day off tomorrow. I walked towards his office, pretty sure that he must be still working.
And I am right! He is still in his chamber, perusing a file. I walk in after knocking twice, as there is no one outside. Apparently, his PA is already gone.
"Excuse me. Sorry to disturb. Good evening," I say, wanting this exchange to be quick, positive and a real conversation.
"Evening," he answers without looking at me, as if he knows me by my voice.
"I actually came here to tell you that I need the day off tomorrow after lunch," I talk away, not wanting to beat around the bush.
"Oh, I see. Do you need a salary increment on top of that too?" he questions in a haughty way.
"Why would I need that?" I ask, completely irritated.
"Why do you want the day off, or should I say 'need'?" He gets up and picks his jacket from the chair.
"Personal reasons..." I trail off, to which he raises a brow. "Actually, my friends are coming back from a vacation. So..." I trail off again.
He passes me an incredulous look, as if I said that my friends have resurrected and paying me a visit the morrow.
After a few calculative moments, he replies,"Okay, fine."
My eyes go wide in happiness and astonishment.
"Okay." I murmur, keeping my unwonted joy at bay.
He walks towards the door but stops near it. "Don't give me that look and if you want a ride home, then follow."
I stifle a giggle and follow him, least bothered of the fact that he knows about my car being in the garage.

The ride to my house is quiet but there is an unfathomable thickness in the air. I can bet that this man doesn't do small talk.
"Do you have any weekend plans?" I start.
"I need to check my calendar but none that I can remember of, except work," he replies absent-mindedly.
"If you have plans to work during the weekend, then don't you join me and my friends tomorrow for dinner?" A dinner is definitely a good idea of payback for the help that he extended when I was drunk.
A couple of lines marks his forehead, giving the impression that he's thinking.
"How about a little change?" he speaks in a suggestive way. "I go for dinner to your place and you work in the weekend. Deal?"
"Why do you have push people so much?"
"'cause I am running a corporation as huge as mine. I can't give my employees their days off and then extend the deadline. One might think that it's just a day but as a CEO, I have to think about all the days round the year when the staff doesn't work. I may wait but the world doesn't. So, I don't too. Not that I can't, but I won't. Anyway, it's a one time deal, take it or leave it."
By the time he ends his lecture, I have already forgotten my question. So, I hiss a 'fine'.
The second I reach the front of my apartment and the tyres screech to stop, I open the door and get out.
"By the way, how do you know my address and apparently, the fact that my car is in the garage?" I need my answers.
"I know a lot of things and I just know this too," he says and pulls the door. "Have a good night." And his car weaves its way off.
I take a long, deep breath. This open air infused with the smell, chill and feel of winter feels so damn good, maybe because it's free and not restrained to thoughts. Afterall, it can blow in any direction it wants, akin to thoughts.
