Ruby Denbrough was a happy and lively girl. She was always able to put a smile to someone's face and always stood up for herself and the people she cared about. She would always run around and cause mischief wherever she can. And by her side was always her little brother George (Georgie) Denbrough.
The brother and sister duo did everything and went everywhere together. Of course they were both close to Bill (Billy) Denbrough too. But Ruby and Georgie were born one year apart so they were the closest with each other. Where one went, the other followed.
But after one rainy October day in the year 1988, everything changed. She was no longer that happy child she once was. There was no more mischief making. No more jokes and smiley faces. No longer was the sibling duo running around and having there own little adventure. She became a shell of who she once was.
She was not the only one who changed after Georgie was gone. Her parents who once cared for their children were struck with grief and seem to become more cold and withdrawn towards their remaining children. It was like they did not care about what happened to them after Georgie disappeared.
Billy became determined to find Georgie. He felt guilty and believed that Georgie's disappearance was his fault. He became more protective towards Ruby and would never let her out of his sight if he could. He believed that his brother was just missing. Just lost.
Ruby knew what had really happened to Georgie before her brother or the Loser club did. She knew because she had witnessed the entire scene that fateful day. And no matter how many times she tried to tell her parents, tell anyone, no one believed her. They believed that she was delusional and making up different scenarios in her head because the truth was too difficult. "How can a clown eating her brother be easier than any other thing that could have happened?" she would think. "How can witnessing her brothers brutal murder be any easier than the truth?"
Still no one believed her. She began to think that maybe she was delusional. Maybe she was seeing things. Maybe it was all just in her head. Maybe she was going crazy.
And she continued to think that everytime she saw It all those months until summer. She would convince herself that it was all in her head. That she was going crazy. That there was no cannibal clown. "You're just seeing things."
But then on May 25,1989, Betty Ripsom goes missing. And she didn't believe that it was a coincidence. As much as she hated to admit it, she was scared. And as more and more children disappeared, she had a hard time convincing herself that she was crazy.
She became more withdrawn and afraid. She couldn't eat without thinking about that rainy day. She could not sleep without thinking about the clowns' razor sharp teeth tearing into the flesh of her brothers arm and dragging him into the storm drain. She could not walk outside without seeing It and knowing that It was taunting her. That It knows that no one believed her. That It terrified her.
Ruby wasn't sure why it didn't just eat her. Why it was letting her wonder around with the knowledge of what happened to her brother. She had a suspicion that It enjoyed what these events were doing to her. That It was making her paranoid. That It was making her feel insane. She felt like It was just playing with its' food. Just waiting until the best moment to attack its' prey.
When summer came along, the 9 year old was on the verge of losing her mind. The children disappearing, the frights and taunts from the clown, her brother watching over her like a hawk. She just wanted to be alone. But then she remembers that Billy had lost Georgie too.
Billy was determined to protect his little sister. He was determined to find Georgie. He was convinced that his sister was not remembering what happened clearly. That Georgie was just lost. Not dead. And while he was coming up with ways to find Georgie, he was coddling Ruby. He was comforting her while she was grieving. Saying that Georgie's alive. That he was not dead. All the while making her feel like she was just going crazy. Maybe Georgie was just missing. Maybe she just hit her head on something and forgot what really happened and made up a crazy and impossible story. Maybe he was alive. Maybe. Just maybe.
That summer the Losers club got more members. The Losers club now included her brother Bill Denbrough, Richie Trozier, Eddie Kaspbrak, Stanly Uris, Beverly Marsh, Ben Hanscom, Mike Hanlon, and herself.
They had met Ben when he had just got away from Henry Bowers and his posse of assholes. Henry had carved part of his name into Bens' stomach, so the losers went to the pharmacy to get medical supplies to help with his injury. They realized that they didn't have enough money and happened to run into Beverly, who was there buying hygiene products. She offered to help distract the creepy pharmacist while they stole the supplies they needed. The losers met Mike when he was running away from Henry and his fellow tormentors Patrick and Victor. They saved him by having a rock throwing war, which scared off the jerk wads when they realized they were out numbered.
The Losers started to encounter It soon after, and realized that Ruby had actually been telling the truth when re-telling the story of what had happened to Georgie. But, Billy still refused to believe that Georgie was dead. He just couldn't be. He was just taken by It.
The losers decide they should go to 29 Neibolt Street to see if they find Georgie. Billy did not want Ruby to come along, but she could not let him go without her. She wanted to protect him just as much as he did her.
They encountered many terrors in that old house that were caused by It. They barely got out alive. This led the losers to having a falling out, temporarily breaking the friend group apart.
They only reconciled when they found out that Beverly was taken by It. Ruby and the losers decided that they had to save her and venture into the sewers, where they found Beverly. Ruby and the losers started to try and defeat it when It grabed ahold of Ruby and shows her it's true form in an attempt to drive her mad or kill her. Only it failed and did not affect her as It would have liked. Ruby was only affected for a moment before breaking out of her frozen state, shocking Pennywise. She used that her advantage to hit it on the head with a lose pipe she had found. This led to everyone hitting and stabbing It until It was weakened and ran away, deeper into the dark sewers.
Billy found Georgie's shredded rain coat and realized he had been dead all along.
After that, Ruby and the losers club made a vow to come back and defeat It when it returns. With that, they all went their separate ways.
The Denbrough parents decided that they should move out of Derry, making them leave their friends behind. And after leaving Derry, Billy started to forget everything that happened that summer, while Ruby is the only one left to remember. Ruby realized that once you leave Derry, you forget It.
Ruby did not think that her life will get more strange after the Pennywise incident. But two years later when she gets a certain letter, she would realize how wrong she was.
