The loss of Mad-Eye Moody hung over the house for several days following his death. I couldn't stop thinking about how I'd just seen him, spoken to him, and then he was gone.
Harry and I both tried to leave, first him, then us together, we were immediately stopped by everyone else, and were convinced to stay at least five more days until Bill and Fleur's wedding. Harry, Ron, Hermione, and I were all tasked to separate things around the house in preparation for the wedding as Mrs. Weasley's attempt at stopping us from leaving. I appreciated her concern, but not being able to see my best friends was beginning to get on my nerves.
After she'd sent Harry to tend to the chickens, Ron to clean his bedroom, and Hermione to change bed sheets, I slipped away from my task of watering the already freshly watered hydrangeas to go see Ron up in his room and check if Harry had managed to get away. When I entered the room, Harry was already there as well as Hermione talking in hushed tones.
"How'd you get away?" Harry asked when I entered. I gave a small smirk.
"It rained last night. Why would I need to water the plants?"
"Good one," said Ron with a grin while Harry snorted in response. I glanced over at Hermione who was seated on Harry's camp bed with her nose buried in a book titled Spellman's Syllabary.
"What's with all the books, 'Mione?" I asked, picking up Hogwarts, A History off the top of one of the stacks which she promptly snatched out of my hand again and placed back on the smaller pile.
"Just trying to decide which ones to take with us," said Hermione, her eyes narrowed at me over the top of her book as I tried to fight back a laugh. "When we're looking for the Horcruxes."
Ron clapped a hand to his forehead. "Oh, of course. I forgot we'll be hunting down Voldemort in a mobile library."
I didn't bother trying not to laugh this time, and let out a loud snort as Hermione glared at him before looking back at her book and throwing it onto the larger of the two piles of books at her feet.
"Listen," said Harry, straightening and looking at us solemnly. "I know you all said after Dumbledore's funeral that you wanted to come with me," Harry started and I rolled my eyes, crossing my arms over my chest.
"Here he goes," said Ron, rolling his eyes as well. Hermione just looked down at Hogwarts, A History with pursed lips.
"As we knew he would," she said with a sigh. "You know, I think I will take Hogwarts, A History, even if we're not going back there. I don't think I'd feel right if I didn't have it with—"
"Listen!" Harry repeated louder.
"No, Harry, you listen," said Hermione, snapping shut one of her books. "We're coming with you. That was decided months ago. Years, really."
"But—"
"Shut up," I said shortly.
"— are you sure you've thought this through?" Harry persisted, looking up at me with pursed lips.
"Let's see," said Hermione coldly, slamming Travels with Trolls down onto one of the piles with a fierce glare in my brother's direction. "I've been packing for days, so we're ready to leave at a moment's notice, which for your information has included doing some pretty difficult magic, not to mention smuggling Mad-Eye's whole stock of Polyjuice Potion right under Ron's mum's nose.
