I love math class even though it's my worst subject, I love the class. But today is Tuesday, and every Tuesday we have a math quiz. This time I think I'll do better, because what we've been going over is actually pretty easy.
" Good morning class. Today we have a math quiz to do, so get out your pencil and get ready. " my math teacher Ms. Martin spoke quietly to the class.
I sit on the far side of the room so lots of people had already started when I got mine. I tried to work quickly and still get the answers right, because I need a decent grade. When I finished I got out my book I was reading on the bus this morning. Surprised to find that my book mark had fallen out somewhere in my backpack.
I didn't bother looking for it and causing a ruckus, so I found my page and just kept reading. For the time being I would just us my notes page.
" Pencils down everyone. " my teacher clapped her hands. " Xander will come and pick up your tests. "
As Xander took up the tests of the other students, I made sure my name was on my page and all the answers where filled in. Then by the time he came to take up my test it would be ready to be graded.
The test took up almost all of the class period and before I knew it we were assigned math homework. " Okay, Kids put your homework away, and I'll see you tomorrow. " The bell rang and it was time to switch classes.
My next class is the best because it starts out with lunch, so I make my way to the cafeteria. I didn't bother waiting for Layla, and by the time I came around the library she had already grabbed my hand and started walking with me.
" Ew! Look Layla Polerd and Kisha MelHavin are holding hands! " a girl yelled making sure everyone could here her.
" Lesbians! " another girl yelled.
" Kisha I thought you had a boyfriend! " they laughed.
Layla just kept walking at a normal pase like they weren't even there. She had to pull me forward a couple of times, because I slowed down but we eventually lost them. " Layla are you okay? " I ask thinking she's gonna tell at me.
" I'm fine, " she says " I'm used to it. " I tilt my head and wonder what she ment by ' I'm used to it. '
We finally get to the cafeteria and I go get my lunch, Layla brought a lunchbox so she went and saved me a seat. To days lunch is children and grave, the best. I get my lunch go find Layla and sit down across from her. " What are you having? " I ask simply out of curiosity.
She opens her lunchbox, " A turkey sandwich and some spice chips. " she passes, " Want some? " she sets the open bag in between us.
I take a couple and try to think of a way to ask her why she was used to being pick on. " Layla. " I start out, " Why are you used to being bullied? "
She looks up at me whipping the little bit of mustard off her face, " Why do you wanna know? "
I look her dead in the eyes and say, " Because, if your being bullied we need to tell someone before its to late. " she looks away for a quick second and then back to me.
" I'm lesbian. " she says looking back down at her sandwich, ashamed.
I don't say anything and just grab her hand, to let her know its alright and nothing to be ashamed of. She squeezes my hand right back, and takes a chip with the other one.
After lunch we have to our related arts classes, mine and Layla's being gym. With five more minutes she lets go of my hand and starts packing up her food to put back in her lunchbox. The bell doesn't ring so we have to know exactly what time to leave, so we can goto our next classes.
On the way to the gym we don't see the group of girls we saw earlier, or Zack and his friends. We just walk quietly down to the gym and find a seat. Usually we have to sit on the bleachers, but today they weren't down so we stood on the balcony. Freshman girls in the visitors side, freshman boys on the home side.
" So how long do ya think we're going to have to wait for Coach Vinson to get here today? " I here a girl next to me ask.
" Probably another twenty minutes, like yesterday. " a girl behind them answered.
I turned to Layla, " I hope not. " I say and she nods as if she was thinking the same thing.
Ten minutes go by and it feels like an hour, just standing and waiting for someone who should already be in here. I start to wonder about Layla and why she did just tell me she was lesbian instead of trying to hide it. ' Maybe she thinks I am to or she could be ling. I really do wonder. ' I look over at her briefly. ' I wonder. '
