I've been stuck in this house for way too long. Sammy occasionally comes by with food for us, and I can only see Lucy and Garret over the phone. Cara has been calling me non stop, but I haven't told her anything. She would freak out and come get me, and I don't want to put her in danger. So I tell her everything is fine, and that I'll see her at Christmas. The thought of finally being free of all this makes me smile, the freedom I've so badly been craving isn't far now. "Okay, so Sammy brought us all sorts of chocolate, and I have your honeycomb bites too, so we're all set to pig out and watch horror movies tonight for Halloween." Colton breaks me from my thoughts as I sit there on the couch stirring my cinnamon tea. "Perfect. Is Sammy coming tonight?" He sets the chocolate down and sits besides me. "Not today babe. Lucifers cage is bustling this time of the year."
That gets me thinking, I'd like to go out tonight. But I know he wouldn't allow it because it's not safe. "Baby?" He must have notice the frown that crept along my face, because now he had twisted his entire body to face me, hand resting on my knee, rubbing small circles soothingly. "I was just thinking," I might as well try, "I wouldn't mind going to lucifers cage tonight." His face grows stern, and I immediately look away, falling deeper into the couch. "I know it's stupid. Forget it" I mutter under my breath as I take a sip of the steamy tea. "Brooklyn" he begins stroking my hair. "I know you're fed up baby. I want to take you out too. I'd love for you to get dolled up and get out of this house. To enjoy yourself and stop worrying about everything" he sighs, caressing my cheek before leaving a kiss there.
"It's okay baby. Here, let's put a movie on" I kiss his lips and rub the back of his neck before nuzzling into his arms and putting on Annabelle comes home. "I love you baby. I hope you know that" he says, watching the screen. "I know you do Colton. I love you too" I say, kissing his chest that I'm nuzzled against.
A few hours go by, and Coltons phone begins ringing off the hook. "It's Sammy. Maybe you should answer" I say, watching his phone light up with Sammy's name for the tenth time in two minutes. He rolls his eyes, and picks up the phone. "This better be good" all of a sudden Coltons face drops and he loses his colour. "What's wrong?" I ask as he puts the phone down slowly. "Marcus wants me to meet him. Tonight. If I don't go, he's going to shoot Sammy." My eyes widen at the thought. Oh god no. "I'll come with you" I say as he paces up and down, grabbing his jacket and his keys. "Absolutely not. I can't let anything happen to you" I stop him as he passes me. "Something might happen if you're not there to protect me." He studies me and thinks about it. "Okay. But you stay in the damn car." I smile triumphantly. "I mean if Brooklyn. Under no circumstances are you to leave the car. Understand?" I kiss his cheek, hoping to calm him. "I promise baby. Let's go." I slide on my heeled pumps, grab the trench coat by the front door and leave ahead of him.
His muscle car roars as we pull to a stop by Marcus's hide out. "Stay here" he demands, grabbing a gun from the glove compartment. I grab his arm as he goes to open the door. "Be carful. I love you" I breath, holding onto him tightly. "I will. I'll be right back baby" he kisses me before he opens the door and leaves. God please protect him.
Coltons pov
Once I'm in the yellow light of the building Marcus works in, I call out in a roar for him to face me. "Calm yourself son. You'll scratch your throat" he laughs, emerging from the darkness. "Where is he Marcus? Let Sammy go!" I grip the gun, looking down into Marcus soulless eyes. "Oh right" Marcus says smiling, clicking. Upon the act, Sammy is brought out by another man and walks up to me. "Are you okay?" I check him over and notice he only has a small bruise forming under his eye. "Yeah. Nothing I can't handle." I pat him gently and give him the car keys. "The lights are still on. Go wait for me there." He does as I say, looking back at Marcus, frowning before walking away.
As I go to leave, two men stand in front of me. "We're not done here boy" Marcus sneers. I turn reluctantly, anger building. "What do you want Marcus?" I all but yell. He chuckles before shaking his head. "Well, it seems we have a little problem. It would seem, you've gone behind my back."
"I don't know what you're talking about but if you're only here to waste my time, I think I'll be leaving now." Before I turn, I hear grunting and groaning coming from the shadows. I squint my eyes to see a man struggling, being dragged out by two more men as his hands are bound and a black bag is over his head. And I know what this means. I'm going to witness a murder. "You know I find out everything Colton. So why did you think you'd get away with this?" He takes the mask off as the man is shoved to his knees on the ground. It's Leon. His face is barely recognisable, smothered in blood and bruises that mangle his once sharp features. My eyes go wide as Leon's eyes meet mine filled with fear, yet acceptance. He knows the risks in this life, so in a way, he's prepared. "Did you really think I wouldn't find out?" Marcus spits. "Get the job done Colton. Or so help me, this will be you." Marcus shoots Leon in the head, blood dripping and pumping from his spilt skull. He falls lifeless into the dirt and Marcus begins walking away. Dear god, what have I done?
Walking back to the car, Sammy waits outside, sitting on the bonnet. "What happened? I heard gun shots?" He asks as he sees me approaching through the tall trees. Once Brooklyn sees me, she bolts out of the car, crashing into my arms. "Are you okay?" She pulls away, checking me over, looking for blood. "I'm okay. He didn't shoot me." My face is emotionless as I picture Leon again. "Colton... what's wrong?" She looks up at me with glossy eyes. "Leon's dead Brooklyn. And it's my fault." Her bottom lip trembles before she hugs me tight, clearly afraid. "It wasn't your fault baby. You couldn't have known." But I did know. I know the risks. And I selfishly bought her innocence into my dark world. I hug her back, resting my head upon hers. "Let's go home baby" I kiss her head, leading her by the hand to the car. Sammy gets in beside her and I drive us all home. Darkness looms on All Hallows' eve. And it has followed me my whole life. I have bought it into her life now too, and should anything happen to her I will forever feel the emptiness that consumes me when she is not around.
