Coltons pov
"Help! Somebody please, she needs help!" I charged into the hospital with her limp in my arms, covered in her blood. Three paramedics ran over, as did several doctors. "We need to get her into surgery immediately" I hear the doctors talk incoherently as I place her down on a gurney and they whisk her away from me. They push her through two doors and just like that she's gone from my sight.Suddenly my phone starts to ring. I look to see it's Sammy. Picking it up, I hear him ask frantically "where are you? Brooklyn's gone and she's not answering her cell." I broke down in sobs over the phone. "Colton?" Sammy's voice is full of nerves. "She jumped in front of me Sammy. She took a bullet for me... if she dies because of me I'll never forgive myself." I could hear keys jingling and feet shuffling over the phone, "I'm on my way colt. What hospital are you at?" I suck in a deep breath and try to compose myself. "Uh, Lennox haven" I say looking around to make sure. "Sammy?"
"Yeah colt?" My jaw tightens before I say "bring me my gun from my place. Break the door down if you must. I've got a new job to finish."I couldn't wait in the waiting room anymore, with all those sad faces. So I got up and went through half a pack of cigarettes outside. That's when I saw Sammy roll up in his corvette. "Colt!" He yells, running over to me. "How is she?" He hands me my hun slyly and I tuck it under my leather jacket. "They haven't told me anything. She's been in there for a while." I look onwards, away from him, the image of her broken lifeless body finds its way back into my mind and I wince at the memory, shutting my eyes in an attempt to push it away. "She's going to be okay colt" Sammy lays a hand on my shoulder but I push it off and snap at him. "How do you know that? How do you that she's not gonna die on that table because of me? Tell me! Tell me hell isn't laughing at me for taking that angels life and ripping it into chaos and misery! Tell me how I'm supposed to live with myself knowing I did that to her, me, the one who was meant to protect her. I failed her..." I fall to my knees, breaking once more. Sammy joins me, placing a hand on my shoulder once more, trying to calm me. "I don't know Colton. But I know she's strong. I know that while she's been with you she's felt what little happiness life has allowed her. You didn't fail her, you're human Colton, we make mistakes. Don't let what happened tonight change the person she's turned you into." His words give me what little strength I have left. Brooklyn Peterson, how on earth did you manage to turn me, a weapon of destruction and a friend of death, into a sobbing mess? I guess love can ruin the strongest of us.
"Colton Anderson?" A nurse calls out, rushing outside looking for me. My eyes and Sammy's shoot to her and I'm off my knees in seconds. "That's me" I answer, voice hoarse. This is it. The waiting game is over and I'll finally discover if the love of my life is okay or if I cost her her own life. Sammy can feel my knees shake, and holds onto me sternly, waiting for some good news for once in our lives. Please be okay. I'll walk away from you forever if it means you have a shot at happiness. Just be okay.
"She's out of surgery. Everything went successfully." I let out a heavy breath I didn't know I was holding and my body instantly relaxes. "She's not out of the woods yet, we found some heavy internal bleeding and somehow the baby survived." What? "I just need you to sign some papers" she starts handing me paperwork but I can't process what she just said. What baby? There's no way. Brooklyn? Pregnant? Fuck. "I'm sorry, but did you just say baby?" She smiles at me and nods. "Yes sir. She's about two months along. Congratulations." Sammy takes the papers from her and she walks back inside. I stumble back until I feel the railing. If I wasn't holding onto them, I'd probably be on the floor. "Woah there man, you okay?" Sammy grabs me, holding me up. "She's..." I can't even get the words out. "I know Colton. I know" he breaths out, just as surprised as me. "Did you know?" I shake my head, eyes sad, knowing I could have lost everything I never knew I needed. "Go to her. She needs you. They both do." Sammy smiles at me as I push myself off the railings and run to her side, frantically looking for her room until I see her there in the doorway, rigged up to multiple tubes and wires.I walk in, slowly, taking in the sight of her chest moving up and down in perfect rhythm. The pain she's been through, everything that I've done to her... I should have walked away when I could have. But now, looking at her stomach, I know I can't. I'll do whatever I must for her and our baby. I'll protect her with all I am.
Sitting on the worn chair by her side, I hold her hand in mine, rubbing small circles with my thumb over her knuckles. I'm taking in every feature on her. The gentle freckles on her nose. The way her eyelashes curl perfectly. The rosy colour of her plump lips. The way her brown hair curls in messy melodies all over her shoulders. I bring her hand up to my lips and kiss it, eyes never leaving her face until I squeeze them shut, seeing her in my mind that first night I met her. She was so fiery. So fierce. "I'm sorry" I whisper against her hand, giving it a gentle squeeze.
Sammy walks in with some food and drinks from a diner down the road. He takes a seat beside me and gives her a once over, face flushing with guilt. "I'm sorry Colton. I should have kept a better eye on her" he says, handing me my drink. "No beer pal, not tonight" he says, knowing I'm confused as to why he's giving me a cola. I nod and crack the can open, throwing it down the hatch. He pulls out two burgers and hands me one. Before I can even unwrap it, I put it back in the bag. "I can't Sammy. I just... can't do anything until I see she's okay." I look back over at her sleeping and pray she wakes up soon.
The doctor walks in shortly after Sammy finished his burger. He only ate half. Seems he can't keep anything down either. "We're just about to do a check up on her and the baby to see how they're doing. I should warn you now though, it's a very low possibility that the child will survive the night" he says, looking at me then looking away. My leg begins bobbing up and down; I can't seem to control my nerves tonight. "Heart rate looks good on mamma here... let's just check the little one..." he begins an ultrasound on her stomach and Sammy and I both keep a carful eye on the monitor, holding our breath. For a while, we can't hear a thing. There's no heartbeat. "I'm sorry" the doctor begins. I kneel my head down defeated, heart trembling. I don't know how much more I can take before I hear it... "thump thump thump". All three of us look up to the monitor, when suddenly the doctor grins and points at the screen. "There he is. Got a steady little heartbeat going. He's strong like his mom." He points at this tiny little bean on the screen and my heart bursts like fireworks and dynamite. "He?" I ask, but it comes out as a faint whisper. "You're having a boy. Congratulations." He sets up a heart monitor for the baby and leaves. My hands are still clasped together in disbelief. "You're gonna have a family Colton. I'm proud of you man" Sammy says, patting my back. I lean over and hug him tightly before looking over at her and wanting nothing but to take her home and start our little family. "Please wake up for me baby. You're not gonna believe what I've got to tell you" I whisper to her, moving her hair from her face. Just then, the monitors start screaming and she starts convulsing. My whole world comes crashing down in seconds.
