XIII: The Vampires Origin
"Alpha...I—"
Ulric is cut off not a second later, the front door to the building slamming open with such force it nearly knocks off its hinges. A man almost runs into Alpha Ernouf, halting himself just before the collision happens.
"Yes, Delta Geri?" Alpha Ernouf's gaze leaves me, turning as this new man, Delta Geri, he nods and shakes his head.
"It's worse than we thought," Delta Geri flicks his gaze to Ulric briefly before returning to his Alpha and stating, "The rogue we managed to capture who rendered Relinger in Ulric's care, it wasn't alone."
Alpha Ernouf raises his brows and questions, "What do you mean he wasn't alone?"
Delta Geri lowers his gaze and mutters grimly, "There's a group...pack perhaps, of rogue wolves close to the border of our territory." He pauses for a second and notes, "It's about to get very violent and our sentinel Relinger should be lucky he's alive."
Ulric arches a brow while Alpha Ernouf appears to be in deep thought. I edge slightly closer to Ulric, unsure of what exactly is happening. I can't read the look that's in his face right now, and after he told me about them having their own rogues among species...it doesn't bode well when he sighs, "Your vamp cannot leave now, it's unsafe."
Ulric nods and hardly says a word before Delta Geri states, "We should prepare for the worst."
"A pack of rogue wolves..." Alpha Ernouf's voice lowers as he murmurs, "...that's unheard of." He pauses once more, only to nod at Delta Geri and state, "We'll meet shortly, get Beta Rolf and those that will need to be present. I'll join shortly here."
Beta?
Is it like Lux said regarding the stars?
This is something I'd like to learn more about through Ulric. What do all these titles and ranks mean within a pack?
"Yes, Alpha," Delta Geri nods quickly before leaving, running out the door of the medical building.
Alpha Ernouf turns his gaze on the two of us now. He eyes Ulric and states, "Once the threat is neutralized, she will leave. If she leaves now, she might be killed outside of our territory...if you can get her out without encountering an issue first, though the vampires will blame us, not wanting to believe in rogues and the forlorn business they have with packs."
"It will be war," Ulric says softly, noting the change in demeanor.
They agree with one another.
"Yes, for who knows how long," Alpha Ernouf acknowledges him and sighs, "the state of our coexistence will be up for grabs." He nods and reminds Ulric, "We will more than likely set up an attack, and I will need you for the wounded and fallen."
Oh, he's not just worried about the possibility of a rogue werewolf killing me and jeopardizing the Covenant-Pack Treaty...
...Ulric is their only lifeline to help those who are injured. That completely slipped my mind.
He has a lot of responsibility placed upon his shoulders. I sure hope his pack is grateful for who and what he is, for what he does. I can see what he does as expected and a thankless job, yet he continues to strive and improve upon what he already knows.
I admire this.
He sacrifices much more than meets the eye.
Something others I don't believe truly will ever see. I'm thankful I've been given the chance to know Ulric, to understand him as...himself, not necessarily a wolf. Though I'm not sure how much I know of him as a wolf, to begin with anyway and I might never.
