XXVI: Blóð
"There, the easy part is done," Ulric chuckles as I watch him remove the silver needle from my arm after he obtains a blood sample from me.
With Alpha Ernouf's go-ahead for Ulric to experiment with my blood, I'm also interested to see what he can find out. All I've ever known is certain bloodlines have unique traits that are expressed in the purest lineages...
...do not weaken the bloodline.
I can see why that Forbidden Act applies to humans...but, what about werewolves? Are they not fiercely strong, the uniqueness I've seen for those within the Ancient Pride Pack is interesting? If that's not the case...why the second Forbidden Act?
I'm still in my thoughts when Ulric rolls his chair over to his lab bench. Gloved, goggled, and masked, he's adding things to the tube he's now placed a smaller sample of my blood in. Furrowing my brows, he's using multiple things, and I finally ask him, "What are you doing to it?"
"I need to first create a lysate," Ulric tells me as he continues to do what he's doing, though I lean at the edge of the bench. He glances up at me before stating, "I prefer to use a chemical method for cellular disruption, this will help break down cell membranes and denature the proteins."
"Uhh...?" I'm lost while he's completely in his element and working away.
He shakes his head before I setting the little tube into a machine. He locks the lid before setting it, the speed of the machine starting and realizing how fast it's going. While Ulric sits back in his chair, nodding at the machine, he notes, "This is a centrifuge. It will sort out and separate cellular debris."
He is very smart, and even though I don't entirely understand what it is he's talking about, it's really neat to be able to watch the steps he takes to move to the next. Though, as we are waiting for the centrifuge to stop spinning, I ask him, "So, what do you think you'll find in my blood?"
"Well, the cure for cancer for one," he jokingly chuckles before I shake my head. He then releases a sigh and nods, "I'm interested more in seeing how these traits stand out in your blood, and if there is a way to categorize them."
"Wait, what do you mean?" I ask with slight confusion.
Ulric tilts his head to the side, looking over me briefly before he states, "The Blood Oath you have with Odette? You express her bloodline trait as well, so you have two within your DNA. I'd like to see how they differ and what we'll find in your genetic makeup."
My head is swimming as I'm a little lost. I've never even thought to look at a deeper level as to what makes me...me. As I look to Ulric, I'm relieved I'll perhaps get those answers. I hope so, as he might uncover something much deeper than I can even possibly begin to imagine and comprehend.
"What happens if you can't find anything?" I ask with hesitation, taking a slight step away from the lab bench as the centrifuge begins to slow down. I'm sure he will, though as he said about himself...in my case...I release a small breath before saying, "I am not a human or a werewolf. I am a vampire."
A small tugs at the corners of his lips as the centrifuge stops spinning. Ulric nods his head while taking the sample out and preparing his next step, telling me, "If your blood can't tell me what we've all seen with our own eyes...well then, I'll just have to deem you a magical unicorn that's impossible to figure out." He pauses for a moment before adding with a smirk, "Which, there is nothing wrong with that."
My cheeks heat slightly, turning red as I look away from him.
While he's working on his next phase, I ask, "What are you doing now?"
