XII: Daylight

While Ulric returns to his duties, I sit on the edge of the medical bed. Tensing and releasing my hands from fists, I look over my hands and know very well there is nothing left in my bloodstream. Unless Ulric's recommendation for any trace amounts of liquid silver was merely a way for me to stay long...

...that doesn't really matter now. By the end of this day, I will be leaving. Alpha Ernouf said some himself, and he's right...I'm being selfish if I stay here any longer than is needed. If my family or anyone else from the vampire society found out I'm in werewolf territory, it would end badly.

Alpha Ernouf is just doing what is best for his pack, keeping them safe, even from an idle threat.

I can't fault him for that.

I can hear sounds coming from the other side of the door. Tilting my head to the side, I can focus in on the hearts beating. If this is the last day, I get to see Ulric, I want to spend it seeing what he does.

Touching the needle in my arm, I notice it's not in my arm any longer. It protrudes beneath the tape against my skin and it's not really a needle, more like plastic. Removing the tape, the needle comes with it, knowing now that I truly do not have any liquid silver in my bloodstream, any foreign object would be ejected from my skin due to my healing.

Ulric had shut off the heart monitor machine before he left, not causing an alarm when I remove the patch from my chest. Stepping down off the medical bed as I shift the sheets to the side, my bare feet touch the cool floor.

Looking down at myself, I'm in a sheet-like garment in itself. Furrowing my brows, I glance around and walk closer to the cot. Down under it, there is storage and...an old lab coat.

I quickly take it and throw it around the garment I'm in, covering my exposed back. I button up and move toward the door, my hair a complete nightmare as I can see strands everywhere when they come into my field of view. Quickly pushing my hair behind my ears, I slowly open the door and see a hallway.

There are windows lining down the hallway, though the shutters keep out most of the light. There are beams that escape, streaming the sunlight through as Ulric had mentioned previously. However, I am more than capable now of maneuvering beneath, to the side, and over them as I make my way down the hallway.

Coming out at the other end of the hallway, is a door. Beyond that door, I come out into a small entryway where I can hear Ulric say, "There's the heartbeat. He's doing well, quite healthy."

"See, nothing to worry about, Neveah," a light chuckle comes from a man. It's a second later he questions, "So, Alpha Ernouf wasn't able to have the vamp removed before the new day?"

Ulric says nothing, me crouching down behind a cabinet does nothing when they can smell me...

"That's the vamp?" Neveah asks, her voice raising alarm.

"Come on out," Ulric says and I swallow hard.

"No! Please, have her leave," Neveah is nearly in tears as I stand to my full height and barely make myself seen. She's shaking her head, lying on a medical bed in the main room while the man stands next to her. She begs, "Rolf!"

The man, Rolf, he asks Ulric, "Can she please leave? I don't want her presence upsetting my mate and causing unneeded stress on the unborn pup."

My voice is uneven as I reply quietly, "I-I'm s-sorry—"

"Wren is not dangerous, nor will she be leaving," Ulric's voice cuts through and leaves silence in his wake. He clears his throat and tells Neveah, "She is merely curious."
