XIX: Night of the Wolf
It's a couple of days later, having the chance to talk to Ulric more and open up about my species while learning about his. We are quite different, yet...
"Would you like to meet my wolf?" Ulric jars me from my thoughts suddenly, almost falling off the chair after he sees a patient out. What does he mean...
...oh.
I...uh...
"I'm scared," my voice alters in pitch.
"What are you scared of?" Ulric questions me while leaning against a cabinet.
While his gaze stares down into mine, I admit, "I've never met a werewolf wolf that wasn't trying to kill another..." recalling the attack by the rogues on the Ancient Pride Pack territory lands. They just seemed so vicious...the animalistic side that dwindles away their humanity is what I fear.
"My wolf is a part of me just as I am a part of him," Ulric is attempting to reassure me, reminding me that their souls are tied together long before that of their mate. They are the closest souls above any other in this world.
Thinking about it for a bit, I finally release a breath of air and sigh, "Okay."
"We'll go somewhere after dusk," Ulric nods and goes back to assisting those as his next patient comes through the medical building front door. I'll have to stay up late, not sure how that's going to work with trying to keep tight to my sleep schedule as much as possible. There have been a few tempting times that I'd give anything for the crisp, cold air of the night.
When night does fall, Ulric takes me away from the areas I've become familiar with by sight. I've yet to participate in anything other than their dinners, or really the aspect is of socializing. I can see how the structures of shade will help and gives me hope that I can walk outside during the day worry-free.
"It's too cold to swim," I tell Ulric as he takes me near a lake that has a run-off waterfall from above that then empty's out into a stream. The stream goes as far as the eye can see through the twisting part of a thick woodland area north.
"We won't be swimming, though I figured you might want to see this since you'd never seen the ocean before I took you," Ulric smiles softly and I immediately glance away, feeling warmth rise in my cheeks.
I nod my head silently and reply softly, "It's beautiful, I love the sound." I'd only seen waterfalls in pictures of books. The sound is unlike anything I've heard before.
Ulric reaches his arms over his back and pulls his shirt over his head. He kicks his shoes off, seeing his hands reach for the top of his pants before I close my eyes and bashfully turn away. It's like he knew I would do this, hearing a soft chuckle leave his lips before I hear the sound of...bones.
It's bones and ligaments, muscles shifting, and just as I turn back, I see a large light brown and gray wolf staring at me. The wolf's irises are a brilliant gold, looking deeply into mine as he stands at waist height to me.
My movements are still as I watch him carefully, the hair on the back of my neck standing up when he licks his lips. He shows his teeth and a small growl is at the back of his throat, my heart starting to beat fast. Fear races through me as I take a step back, his wolf watching me the entire time.
His fur starts to bristle, his tail rising, and my heart suddenly drops into the pit of my stomach. The air leaves my lungs when I turn to run away, not quick enough as my yelp is cut off when my chest hits the grass. Ulric's wolf has me pinned to the ground, my hands having flown up and wrapping around the back of my neck to protect myself from a lethal attack.
