XX: Toxin
I don't know exactly what Ulric and I are to one another. It's been a swimming thought coursing through my mind as I've finally been able to get back on my sleep schedule. I can't help but shy away slightly at our interactions, unsure of exactly where we stand...
...what are we doing?
I want to ask him as I sit in the medical building. Ulric's helping a pup that broke her ankle. Staring at the incredible work he performs; it makes me wonder what type of purpose my life means. I've not wondered about this too much until now, the whole immortal aspect one I've been privileged to.
Though seeing everything here changing, watching interactions of those young and old. They learn from one another, passing down a lifetime of wisdom, stories, and knowledge.
Even if they have mortal ends.
"Here," Ulric breaks me from my thoughts as the pup leaves with her mother. I blink a few times and settle my gaze on the glass of water Ulric is offering me.
"Thank you," I smile softly as I take it from him. His demeanor, I'm not sure really how to describe it. It's hard to decipher right now, though I'm not sure if I'll like the answer or not in the end.
What we did was dangerous...it could have led to...
Ulric asks me, "Are you okay with what happened a few nights ago?"
"I—I..." the air catches in my lungs before I quickly bring the glass to my lips and swallow a big gulp of water. I'm hoping it will calm my nerves, Ulric staring at me while sitting in his chair.
"Wren...I," he pauses and clears his throat, trying again, "it's just that...I—"
I shake my head and tell him, wanting to be the strong and sensible one...for once. A light sigh leaves my parted lips, "Even if it wasn't forbidden...to lay with a vampire," I pause and hold his gaze, wanting reality to sink in for him, "I could never produce a pup for you. Your line would end, even if I somehow managed to be blessed to bleed, there's no guarantee our species can even conceive with one another. I'll never forget this...though perhaps, I—"
"I haven't felt this drawn or connected to another since my late mate," Ulric cuts me short and I inhale deeply. He shakes his head and sighs, "I don't know what I've been thinking, and I'm so sorry to have dragged you down with me."
"Ulric, no...no, you haven't you—"
I'm cut off as I'm pleading with him to not take the full blame with how we have managed to end up here. A female holds a pup that barely appears to be breathing. She cries for Ulric, "Ulric! Please!" She is exasperated as she nearly falls, tears streaming down her cheeks.
Ulric is quick and bolts from his chair. He takes the pup from his mother's arms, rushing to lie him down on one of the medical beds. She's shaking as she watches Ulric hastily reaching into his cabinets. The pup's ears begin to trickle blood and screams for Ulric once more.
He is at the pup's side, a needle piercing directly down and into his heart as Ulric releases the liquid from the syringe. The blood almost instantly stops Ulric, inspecting the pup as his symptoms are settling down.
Ulric asks the female, "Where?"
"I—I notified the sentinels the plants were growing just outside of the territory to the south. My son ran off and ingested it..." the female is in pain as she clutches her chest. The worry she must have been holding onto for her pup's life is strong.
"Take him home and have him rest up," Ulric nods and explains, "liquid meals for the next few days in case his stomach doesn't like the side effects of the cure."
