XXIII: Be Prepared
"I would sooner die, than give you any satisfaction," the words leave my mouth rather quickly, glaring at him with every bit of loathing I have for him. I have never hated someone, been pushed to all but want them lying dead in front of me. That's the chill I feel run down my spine when Prince Rune takes a step toward me, narrowing his eyes.
"There's no need for that, your disgusting choice for a beloved will die for you. That'll be satisfaction enough," there's a wicked look that lingers in his eyes, my heart beating fast at the way the smirk twists on his lips.
No...
"I—"
"Besides, you'll die soon after, as your crime for treason, breaking a Forbidden Law and breaking the Covenant-Pack Treaty, the punishment is death," Prince Rune cuts me off before I have a chance to hardly part my lips and speak.
My eyes search his, wondering what it must take to harbor this much hate in a single soul.
He tilts his head to the side and chuckles, "What? Did you really think that you'll remain by my side through Krafa?"
The look on my face must be egging him on, as I feel like I'm trapped and without Odette, I'm not entirely sure how to move forward now. Fine...if that's what he wants, then I'll let him have it full force.
I take a deep breath, steadying my heart as I stand up straight. My gaze never falters as I tell him, "It must be incredibly sad how obvious your ego was hurt by the unwillingness for me to just give myself to you like some trophy. Everyone can see it, so what? Because you were embarrassed that your actions didn't work, that your actions would be condemnable by any other of our species, yet it's made out to be some big game for royalty?"
Shaking my head in disgust, I tell him with barely any thought, "You're a pup that didn't get its way, lost to emotion in a temper tantrum. The worst part, no one is holding you accountable for your actions. What you tried to do...the werewolves would have punished you for your malicious evil, even if you were an Alpha. No one wants to follow under that example being set."
Now I see, why Odette wants a new ruler on the throne...
...what does the rest of the vampire society think? To be forced to follow and comply or risk death for standing against the roaring tide? Perhaps, Odette isn't as crazy as I believe she is, for wanting something different, for a change the werewolves might also be in allegiance with.
I can only hope, hope for the best outcome.
Prince Rune's features shift throughout me berating his entire existence. When I fall silent, I watch him carefully, my breathing suddenly catching in my lungs when I feel that command surround me...that very one that strikes through to my soul, "Kneel."
It's just as before with the night of the Dance of the Lilies...
...my eyes are wide as I come crashing to my knees before him. My muscles tense, a slight shake to my body as I try and break free as I did before...now it all makes sense as to why I was able to the first time...and yet...now...
"Awe, so confused, aren't you?" Prince Rune takes a step toward me, reaching his hand out and cupping the side of my face. My stomach revolts at his touch, the way he brings his hand down to my chin, his fingers taking hold of it as he lifts my gaze upward.
I...I...
"I—"
"Silence," Prince Rune commands and it feels as though my jaw sews and wires shut. It's absolutely terrifying, the fear growing wildly within me.
