Chapter 6: The Burdens We Bare

After several hours of silence, L takes a moment to glance up from his computer screen, and to the woman in the chair across from him.

He's almost certain she had cried herself to sleep in that chair.

She's balled up, her knees pulled to her, and her wrists pulled into her waist due to her restraints. Her right side rests on the back of the cushion, and her chest slowly raising and falling.

Despite the girl being seemingly harmless, L can't bring himself to trust her.

For a moment, he thought she would be more comfortable on the couch or in a bed. But he assumes the last thing she would want, would to be woken up by him.

His thoughts are interrupted, when Watari comes to his side.

"Sir, they just called about the information she gave you."

"Is she who she claims?"

"Unfortunately they couldn't find any information, despite the ID she gave you appearing to be authentic." He explains "According to her name, license number, and her social security number, Katelyn Elkins of Columbus Ohio doesn't exist."

"An alias?" He asks.

"Im afraid not sir. If there was anything to be traced, it would've been found. But there wasn't. I'm sorry it wasn't of any help."

L has half a mind to wake the burdensome woman up then and there.

He is at a complete loss. But even more so, he is irritated. He knows the girl isn't capable of harm, and he is certain she isn't Kira. But nevertheless, if the girl had any hope that he could've trusted her, she might as well abandon it.

Without knowing exactly who she is, his overly analytical brain would never be at ease without knowing her every move, given what she knows about him.

He sucks in air, as his eyes are fixed on the woman. His brain replaying every moment since she's come across his path.

"You're suppose to be the good guy..."

"I thought you would help me!"

He breaks his stare to pinch the bridge of his nose. Perhaps he was being to hard on the woman...

He breathes deeply. Looking back up, she's of course still there.

No. No, L can't afford to second guess himself. He can't afford to feel such feelings. Especially those of guilt. Not when his life is on the line. So he'll do what is necessary, until he can figure out how to deal with this situation, and put an end to this, for him and this woman.
