Cigarette Thief

“Who was that kid hanging around your locker earlier?” I questioned Macy as we lined up for lunch.

“Scott and Austin?” She furrowed her eyebrows at me as she pulled a salad tub from the school’s main fridge. Trust her memory to only recollect Scott. I reached in and pulled out a chicken sandwich before sighing.

“No, not them. I know who they are dummy. I meant the dark haired kid.”

She looked at me as if I’d come out of space.

“The one who was chewing gum really loudly, dark eyes, black jeans?” I looked at her in hope.

“It sounds like the male version of you,” She giggled, covering her mouth with her hand out of politeness.

“Oh haha,” I replied, shrugging her off. We paid for our food but before we parted ways to sit with our own individual friend groups I scanned the cafeteria for any sign of the mystery boy.

“Him,” I pointed towards her usual table of friends as soon as I spotted him. He was sitting next to Nicky, one of Macy’s prissy little friends, with his arm slung around her shoulder and she was holding on to his hand for dear life it seemed.

“OH! That’s Calum,” She glanced at me before looking back over at him. “He’s cute, isn’t he?”

It took me a while to register her response as I watched his every move, analysing him.

“You alright?” Macy asked, nudging me with her elbow. I shook my head to rid myself of questioning thoughts of him and looked at her, dumbfounded and completely oblivious to my surroundings. I was in no way interested in Calum- physically, romantically or philosophically and all that lark… but something about him was intriguing and I couldn’t quite decipher what that was just yet. I was adamant to find out though.

“Yeah, just… when did he join? I’ve never seen him around before,” This time when my eyes swept over to her group of friends my eyes locked on to Calum’s. He was already looking at me.

“I’m not sure, I’ll ask Scott. He seems in to you though,” She winked at me before strutting away, her heels clicking against the wooden floor. “See ya later sis.”

As soon as Calum and I had made eye contact I’d swiftly looked towards the ground. Once my sister had departed I shuffled over to my group of friends and plopped myself down in between Michael and Ashton, opposite Amy who was seated next to Tristan and Addison. This was my group of friends; the ones everyone tried to avoid, however it was pretty hard to avoid me as my sister was one of the most popular girls in the whole school. I guess I was just an exception.

“Hey Marn!” Michael ruffled my wavy hair.

“Hi Mikey,” I smiled.

“I know you hate it when I say things like this but your sister is so hot,” Tristan spoke, gawking over at her.

“Excuse me, identical twin sitting right here,” I scoffed, quite offended.

“Yeah but she’s all girly and dresses to impress whereas, you’re just not like that,” He shrugged still looking in Macy’s direction.

“Well I think you are perfect the way you are Marnie Moo,” Ashton giggled from beside me, slinging his arm around my shoulder and giving it a squeeze.

I wasn’t totally hurt by Tristan’s words because I knew he didn’t mean it as an insult, we all knew if I was like my sister things would be completely different. It’s just that I hate being compared to her, being twins doesn’t mean you have to be exactly the same. All being twins means is that we share the same DNA, we were born on the same day and we shared my mum’s womb for the same amount of time. We already share enough things; why bother with sharing a personality?

I liked being different. Being different is cool… or at least that’s what I tell myself.

“Thanks Ash,” I kissed him on the cheek before attacking my sandwich since I hadn’t eaten any breakfast. I was absolutely starving.

“This is precisely why your sister is hot,” Tristan spoke up from next to Amy, who whacked him on the arm. I looked up innocently as a piece of chicken fell from my mouth on to the table. Swallowing my mouth full I glared at him from across the table.

“What’s that supposed to me? Huh?” I began to grow angry.

“Nothing personal. It’s just she’s so feminine and it’s a wonder you two are actually related let alone twins.”

I was ready to throw a full on bitch fit.

“Dude, shut up,” Michael warned as he finished his second slice of pepperoni pizza.

“What? Marnie is basically a boy compared to her! She wears ripped skinny jeans and converse rather than heels and a pretty skirts. Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying I don’t like a girl in band shirts and stuff but it’s just odd really, that’s all,” Tristan started up on the defensive side, raising his hands slightly in mock surrender.

I pushed away from the table with both of my hands, my chair legs scraping across the floor as it flew backwards. All of them looked up at me in fear of my next action; Tristan especially.

“Fuck you,” I spat at him with as much venom as I could muster while yanking my bag off of the floor and stalking away like a badass.

I never really liked Tristan but he’d never been so agitating in all the three years I’ve been part of that friendship group. Addison never really spoke, Amy was the peacekeeper, Michael just liked to flirt but also stood up for me through anything and Ashton was like a cuddly bear; he didn’t get mad at much. However Tristan was the troublemaker (Cue the Murs Army), he was the only one that caused any arguments amongst the group and today I’d had the final straw.

As I stormed out of the cafeteria and made it outside I collapsed on to the grass, pulling my cigarette box and lighter out of my bag. I hated smoking, I absolutely despised it, but sometimes smoking was the only way to get rid of my chaotic thoughts.

I placed it between my teeth and cupped the lighter as the flame burnt the tip of the cigarette, allowing ash to flutter to the ground in a short dance. I took a long drag before blowing out the smoke in a long, grey trail. Closing my eyes, I leant back. It was highly likely I’d get in trouble for smoking on school grounds but at this moment in time I really didn’t care. As I took my second drag someone pinched the cigarette from my grip, I opened one eye and shielded it from the sun in an attempt to catch the culprit. I expected it to be a teacher but it wasn’t.

It was Calum.
