BRANDON JONES

The interview with Dave had gone south. I knew it was my fault. My emotions–my connection to the case–had gotten the best of me. It hadn't been my best moment, but we needed to move on.

Our interviews with Jesse Neuntez and Aaron Durlick had provided a couple of leads, though if I was being honest I'd hoped that we'd have more to show. Sure, Jesse had given us a lead with the mysterious Ray guy, but until Aaron came back with information from the accident, we didn't have much more than when we'd started. I was starting to feel as though I'd failed so far in the investigation.

I decided that we needed a new approach–something more than digging up leads by talking and interviewing. We needed a boots on the ground method to gather information about Thomas's disappearance, and that wasn't going to happen unless we saw with our own eyes where Thomas's truck was found. And so, we went to the woods.

AUDIO FILE NUMBER 2.1: TRANSCRIPT OF BRANDON JONES AND SEAN O'CONNOR INVESTIGATION OF THE SITE OF THOMAS NOVAK'S LAST KNOWN WHEREABOUTS

DATE: OCTOBER 12, 2019

LOCATION: MILE MARKER 10, FOREST SERVICE ROAD 23, UNINCORPORATED ARCHANGEL COUNTY, WASHINGTON STATE

*Note from the Editors: This portion of audio is of especially poor quality due to both the surroundings of both Mr Jones and Mr. O'Connor. We have tried to the best of our ability to leave the transcript as true to the original as possible. However, given the a) alleged human screams, and b) roar of a large animal heard on this recording, we feel that the text would be better served by an occasional note to provide clarity. We apologize if this is disorienting for our readers in any way.

SEAN O'CONNOR

God damn it!

BRANDON JONES

(voice low) Will you keep your voice down!

SEAN O'CONNOR

You're worried about my voice, and I'm worried about falling in the goddamned woods.

BRANDON JONES

Pick your feet up when you walk.

SEAN O'CONNOR

What the hell is that going to change so long as I can't see anything?

BRANDON JONES

We're in the middle of the woods, man. It's dark.

SEAN O'CONNOR

Are you sure there's not a better flashlight in your car? That little penlight you have isn't doing shit.

BRANDON JONES

I didn't say I don't have another flashlight. I said we shouldn't use another flashlight. We're trying not to draw attention to ourselves.

SEAN O'CONNOR

This is the middle of nowhere. Whose attention could we possibly draw?

BRANDON JONES

There's always a chance someone could be out here. This is still a crime scene, after all.
