Note from the Editors

The following is a portion of a transcript from a live news show on WIBS, a major network affiliate in Chicago. The show's content was brought to our attention by Imani Carter, a law student working at the TARN Justice Project during the podcast's final production. Ms. Connor had been reviewing the audio tracks for any background music which might represent copyright infringement when she recognized the voice of the man speaking to Ray Abramov just prior to Brandon and Sean's confrontation with him. Ms. Carter recalled hearing the man's voice, now identified as Richmond Chandler, CEO of SubCranium Data Corporation in Kansas CIty, from the following news broadcast, and brought it to the attention of the editorial staff at the TARN Justice Project.

Neither Mr. Chandler, or SubCranium Data were available for comment at the time of publication of The TARN Conspiracy.

CHARLES DENIER

Good evening, and welcome to WIBS Chicago Evening News. I'm Charles Denier. An interesting story coming out of Kansas City, Missouri today where a company called SubCranium Data claims to have created the very first, fully functional copy of a human brain. Sources inside the company report that the breakthrough is the result of close to ten years' worth of research into what the company calls neural mapping technology. The technology truly is groundbreaking (EMPHASIS ADDED), and we've sent our lead field reporter, Michelle Dessange, to explain why. Michelle, are you there?

(CAMERA SHOT CHANGES TO A WOMAN STANDING IN WHAT APPEARS TO BE AN UNDERGROUND FACILITY)

MICHELLE DESSANGE

I'm here Charles.

CHARLES DENIER

Perfect. Michelle, why don't tell our viewers what's so unique about this company.

MICHELLE DESSANGE

Charles, what's really interesting about SubCranium isn't just the work they're doing. It's where they're doing it. I'm here inside the SubTropolis Business Park, more than 160 feet below the surface of the ground in what used to be a limestone mine, but has been converted into nearly 55 million square feet of business space.

CHARLES DENIER

Golly, Michelle, that sounds almost dangerous. Can you tell us what it's like inside?

MICHELLE DESSANGE

As you can see behind me, SubTropolis isn't anything like what you'd expect to find in a place that used to be chocked full of mining equipment. The floors and walls are smooth and painted, and there's enough lighting to almost make you forget you're underground at all.

CHARLES DENIER

Remarkable. Truly remarkable.

MICHELLE DESSANGE

It is, Charles. But what's more remarkable is the work that's being done here.

(CAMERA PANS SLIGHTLY TO THE RIGHT, SHOWING A MAN IN A PINSTRIPE SUIT STANDING BESIDE MICHELLE)

With me here is Richmond Chandler, CEO of SubCranium Data Corporation. Mr. Chadler, thank you so much for meeting with me.

RICHMOND CHANDLER

Of course, Michelle. And please, call me Richmond.

MICHELLE DESSANGE

Ok, well, Richmond, tell me all about this new technology your company has developed.

RICHMOND CHANDLER

I would be happy to, Michelle. First, I think it's important to point out that we haven't really invented anything.

MICHELLE DESSANGE

I'm afraid I don't understand.

RICHMOND CHANDLER

You see, Michelle, what SubCranium has done is draw a map of technology that already exists. (RICHMOND TAPS AN INDEX FINGER AGAINST HIS FOREHEAD) Right here. The human mind is the greatest computer ever created. All we've done is create a map of its inner workings. We call it a Neural Chart.

MICHELLE DESSANGE

I see. So now that you have this Neural Chart, what do you plan on doing with it?

RICHMOND CHANDLER

I'm glad you asked that, Michelle. You see, the Neural Chart we've created will, for the first time, allow human beings to examine what consciousness is made of–how it's formed. We can finally understand what goes into making a person, a person.

MICHELLE DESSANGE

Why would you want to do that?

RICHMOND CHANDLER

Have you ever lost anyone, Michelle? Someone close to you? Someone you cared about?

MICHELLE DESSANGE

Um, yes, but–

RICHMOND CHANDLER

And what would you give to have that person in your life again? Not just for a few minutes, or even for a few days, but for the rest of your life?

MICHELLE DESSANGE

Are you saying that you can bring people back to life with Neural Chart?

RICHMOND CHANDLER

No, Michelle. I'm saying that with Neural Chart, people never have to die at all.
