Sage Daniels sat in her friends room, laughing as Rachel tried to do Sage's makeup (having absolutely no experience whatsoever even though she was in her mid teens) and messing up terribly. Eyeliner was scribbled right beside of her eye lid instead of directly on it, her lips a blood red and her cheeks a cotton candy pink. She looked like a clown, all she needed was the blue eye shadow and red wig and she would be fine.
"I look awful!" Sage yelled, a laugh falling from her lips. Rachel let out squeals of laughter in response, trying to breathe in between her laughs as she responded.
"I'm sorry!"
"Mhm, I'm sure." Sage smiled. The two fifteen-year-olds finally put the palette of make up away, cleaning of their faces (which involved a lot of scrubbing.) They sat on Rachel's bed, popcorn in their hands as they watched a movie whilst talking about the boys that they liked at school as well as the ones they hated. Sage glanced at her friends clock before letting out a sharp gasp and jumping from the bed.
"What's wrong?" Rachel quickly asked, watching as the girl started to grab all of her things and stuff them into her bag.
"I promised my mom I would be home before three, it's four." Sage explained.
"Oh! Sorry, I meant to remind you."
"Don't worry about it, I'm sure she'll understand." Sage assured, offering her a small smile. When she grabbed everything, she threw her bag over her shoulder and gave Rachel a small wave. "Bye, Rach! See you tomorrow!"
"Bye Sage!"
Sage quickly ran out of her friends house, jumping over the porch steps and making the walk to her house. She lived about ten minutes away from Rachel, twenty minutes walking distance. The girl whistled to herself, a little skip in her step as she made her way home to her parents and little sister.
She looked up at the sky and frowned slightly when she saw smoke filling the air. It took her a moment before she realized the smoke was coming from the place her house was near. Sage took off running, running as fast as she possibly could until she stopped in her tracks. A hand covering her mouth when she saw her house falling apart from the fire that was licking at its walls.
"MOM!" The girl yelled. Her bag fell to the ground and she went off running only for someone to grab her and hold her back. That's when it started, when the houses continued to catch on fire. Smoke and ash filled the air, her entire family was dead and she was trying to hide in hopes of avoiding the bombs that were falling on the ground. She didn't know who was attacking her small city, one of which wasn't really known as much as London or Scotland. Sage was scared, her family was dead, she had no one, so she ran for shelter.
She stopped and let out a gasp when a building exploded right in front of her, sending her backwards and covering her in soot. She coughed violently, her ears ringing from the explosion being so close. Screams were let out around the town, and it all happened so fast. One minute she was with her best friend, laughing and watching movies, the next her city was being blown up.
White and black ash covered everything, and it seemed to happen in seconds, when really it was only thirty minutes. Everyone and everything was gone. She sat on the ground, shock and fear coating her body. She stayed in the town, having no where to go. She was searching, trying to see if there was a possibility that she wasn't the only survivor, hoping there was just one house that hadn't been plow to pieces. But there was nothing.
Her town was a graveyard. One that was full of all the people that she used to know and have regular conversations with. She stayed in the town for days, searching for anything she could find and having no way to get out of the city seeing as she's never done so. It was when people had filled the city, trying to figure out what had happened when Sage met her.
A red haired woman saw her and approached her. Sage scrambled backwards, though she was weak from having no food and clean water. The woman held out her hand, showing the girl that she meant no harm.
"Was this your home?" The woman asked. Sage nodded her head. The woman carefully knelt down in front of her before saying, "What's your name sweetheart?"
Sage debated on telling her before deciding that she needed the woman's help and answering. Her voice was hoarse and raspy as she spoke. "S-sage."
"Hello, Sage. I'm Beatrix Snow, I'm here to help you. You don't have to be afraid." Beatrix assured. She had a kind voice and a kind smile on her face. "Will you let me help you?" Beatrix held out a hand for the young teenager. Sage looked at her hand for a moment before shakily putting her hand into the older woman's, allowing her to help her up.
"Let's get you cleaned up, and then we can talk. Okay?" Sage nodded her head in response. Beatrix smiled down at the girl before leading her away from her destroyed city, bringing her into a new life that would change her forever.
