CHAPTER SEVEN:
KILL ORDERIT MADE MARIA FURROW HER eyebrows when she got the text that needed her to be back at her workplace as soon as she could get there, especially with out all of the details as to why. Sure she knew she was going to have to go into work eventually that day, never committing to the whole taking a day off of work thing. She walked into the SHIELD facility, her eyes roaming the area as she watched the agents at their stations, passing by them to head towards Nick Fury's office.
Her hair was placed in its usual up do, a single strand falling in her face to which she quickly pushed away. Her face was calm as she glanced towards the lab where Rosalynn Stone sat there, studying god knows what with her fingers gently tapping against the table. A smile curled at the corners of her lips as she watched the woman before she turned her head, her face turning serious once again. She stopped in front of Nicky Fury's office, knocking twice before opening the door.
Nick Fury sat there in his chair, looking up only when the door opened and closed once again. He straightened his posture, his hands clasped together as he watched the woman approach his desk. She stopped, taking a stand in front of him, looking the man in the eye.
"You wanted to see me, sir?" Maria quizzed.
"I did." Fury nodded his head.
"Well, I'm here." Maria commented. Fury glanced at the girl before taking a stand, leaning his hands on to his desk as he looked at the woman he had always put his trust in. The woman that knew how to get the job done, even if there are some casualties involved. Not saying she was Natasha Romanoff or anything like that, but Maria had a backbone, and she wasn't afraid to kick you in the face if you did anything to mislead her trust. The woman crossed her arms over her chest, cocking an eyebrow at her boss.
"We have reason to believe that HYDRA is planning on attacking you." Fury told the woman, making both of her eyebrows raise this time.
"And why's that?" Maria questioned, frowning slightly.
"Why? We don't know. Who? Don't know that either. All we know is that HDYRA plans to come after you sometime soon, and their mission isn't to capture or torture. It's simply to kill." Fury told the woman. But as per usual, Maria wasn't phased. There was always someone out to get her or one of her co-workers. However, she had never directly been targeted for a kill mission before. She furrowed her eyebrows, trying to think of anything she could've done in order to piss HYDRA off. But then she remembered, she was a SHIELD agent. She didn't have to do anything in order for a kill order to be placed on her back.
"However, we have reason to believe the woman you were with earlier―︎"
"Really, Nick? Spying on me?" Maria muttered, giving the man an unamused look. He shrugged his shoulders, unashamed. "You know I don't like it when I'm constantly being watched by SHIELD without my knowledge."
"Well, now you have knowledge that SHIELD is watching you." Fury retorted, receiving a blank look from the woman in front of him. She closed her eyes, clicking her tongue for a moment as she shook her head. She opened her eyes once more, her arms crossed across her chest as she looked at her boss once more.
"I've only met the woman once, something that's definitely not bound to happen again seeing as it is New York." Maria told the man, giving the slight shrug of her shoulders. Fury just looked at the woman with a raised eyebrow, patiently waiting for Maria to understand what exactly it was that he was hinting at. The woman examined her bosses facial features for an moment before she widened her eyes slightly in disbelief. "You want me to find her?"
"Precisely." Fury nodded his head.
"Nick." Maria spoke, letting out a small scoff as she shook her head slightly.
"All you have to do is find the woman, and see what she's up to." Fury answered nonchalantly. Maria gave him a blank look and he stood up, walking around his desk so that he was standing right beside of the woman. "You don't have to, of course. I'm sure Romanoff would like a distraction, or Mrs. Barton."
"Theo wouldn't come if it involved using her gift." Maria told the man. "And Romanoff's off doing god knows what."
"Exactly." Fury nodded his head. "You're the only choice here, Hill."
Maria looked at him for a moment, her jaw clenching before she nodded her head in agreement. "Alright. I'll find out what Sarah Gillies truly wants." The woman glanced around the office for a moment before speaking once more. "If that's all, Director."
Fury motioned his hand towards the door. "As you were." With that, the woman turned on her heel and walked out of the office, silently hoping and praying that for once in her life that Nick Fury was wrong about his beliefs.
