CHAPTER NINE:
GETTING THE JOB DONE

FOR THE NEXT TWO DAYS, Sage sat in her apartment, her knee constantly bouncing up and down as she thought about the fact that she would be hanging out with Maria Hill. She was confused to say the least. She had studied Maria Hill. Her actions, her file, she knew everything there was to know about the woman. And one thing that Sage knew about the woman was that she didn't trust easily. Actually, she didn't trust anyone. She knew better than that. So the real question was, why did Maria so easily hand her her number and invite her to come whenever.

The dark skinned woman decided that she would just dress casually. It was simply a hangout, but it was a step in the right direction. It was the step in which Beatrix wanted her to take in order to assassinate the woman. She knew Beatrix wanted to get back at S.H.I.E.L.D. for whatever it was that they had done to her, but assassination weren't exactly her style. She didn't like killing off one person at a time. She liked to make her life easier by killing off multiple people all at once. That's just who Beatrice was.

Sage pulled her hair up into a ponytail, before shaking her head and allowing her dark hair to fall over her shoulders, deciding that she would just straighten it like she usually did. She didn't wear her hair up unless it was for a mission, but even then she wore her hair down and allowed it to wildly fly around as she kicked people's asses. She didn't know why she did, but it just made her feel more powerful she assumed. With a sigh, the woman pulled on the leather jacket that were covering her arms before turning around and grabbing her phone. She texted Maria, asking where she wanted to meet her.

"How about the coffee shop? We never did finish that tour of New York."

Sage didn't realize that she was smiling at this before she had responded and saw her reflection on the screen of her phone. The woman cleared her throat, tucking the phone in her pocket as she shook her head slightly. She didn't understand why she was so excited about this. But she was starting to find herself grow excited every time she managed to meet Maria. Even when she had purposely bumped into the woman on the sidewalk her first day in New York, her heart rate seemed to spike and she almost felt sorry for the fact that she had ruined the woman's dark blouse. However, Sage knew she couldn't think about that. If Beatrix even had the slightest idea that Sage had a slither of feeling for her target, she would immediately rip Sage from the mission and either put Roxanne on the mission or just get Blake to simply shoot the woman in the head and kill her.

As she grabbed her car keys, she walked out of the apartment and towards her car with the thought of Roxanne, Blake, and Malia all in her head. She had only been gone from the facility for two weeks, but she couldn't help but miss the three. She wondered how they were doing without her. Or if they even cared that she was no longer there. Sage knew that she was way too emotional for her own good. Even as they beat her into a soldier that would do whatever it was that she asked of, there always the smallest sliver of remorse that fell over her every time she killed someone. Well, at least that's how it usually went. That was until one of their own had been killed. Someone that Sage had grown close with. Someone that Sage had took under her wing and helped train and talk shit to Beatrice about.

The girl had been a few years older than Malia, and a few years younger than Sage. Just like she had Malia, Sage felt for the girl and had helped the heat of Beatrice to stay away from her as much as possible. She had always had a soft spot for those younger for her. Hell, even Malia claimed that Sage was more of her sibling than Blake was because he was too focused on getting the job done. And that's what Sage should have been doing at that very moment as she sat in her car, having yet to back out and make her way towards the coffee shop.

Her focus was supposed to be on getting the job done, and only getting the job done. And she didn't know why she was finding that so difficult. Just the simple thought of Maria Hill sent her mind into a series of thoughts that weren't even relevant. She had only run into the woman a total of three times, and yet here she was, already distracted. Was she really that weak? Was she really that bad of an agent? Beatrix had been the one to tell her to get close to the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, and she was doing that. In fact, that's exactly what she was about to go do. She was going to complete the mission without zero hesitancy and zero complications. Well, at least that was her mind set for the moment anyways.

With a huff, she pushed a strand of hair from her face and backed out before quickly spinning the car around driving down the road, tapping her finger against the wheel without even realizing how truly nervous she was for this hangout.
