Chapter 5

ALL CHARACTERS BELONG TO TANGLED THE SERIES AND DISNEY, COVER ART DOES NOT BELONG TO ME

The hooded figure moved quickly towards the group, andrew dropped Rapunzel and reached for his sword but the figure had already knocked him to the ground with the item in his bag, from what Rapunzel could see, it looked to be a knife. But from the lack of stab wounds on andrew, it was clear it wasn't that. Rapunzel looked in shock unsure if the person would attack, to her surprise the figure moved towards her friends and their captors knocking each of the Saporians to the ground. Eugene ran to Rapunzel the moment he was free not wasting a breath. "Cmon blondie we gotta go" andrew started to get up glaring the the hooded figure who now stood in a fighting position. "No we have to help! We have to free our kingdom!" Andrew ran at the two while the other Saporians started to stand ready to fight. "Trust me sunshine, sometimes it's better to live to fight another day!" The figure moved to block andrew from the couple as Eugene lead Rapunzel out of the throne room. Everyone else in the group was waiting by the exist ready to go, Rapunzel took one last look back at the figure who was fighting off the Saporians. She watched as he got surrounded and she was sure if not helped he would've been captured. "Wait no!" She turned to run back to their savior but as she did the figure threw his hand in the air with a small ball inside it he threw it to the ground and as it almost shattered a pink smoke filled the room the group stood astonished. "Was- was that..." Cassandra started to stutter "alchemy." Rapunzel finished. Out of no where the hood emerged from the smoke which was quickly clearing, he grabbed Rapunzel and Eugene by their hands trusting the others would follow and ran.
They ran outside the castle down the street and into and ally way. Every one stood catching their breath and the figure sat, looking at the ground panting. One Rapunzel had enough air in her lungs she spoke "who are you.." the figure didn't look up. Everyone already knew who was sitting before them, they could tell by the slim and short figure, how fast he was and the alchemy was a dead give away. "Are we really playing dumb here?" Eugene looked at Rapunzel who's eyes didn't leave the boy. "For once i agree. Varian stand up. Now." Cassandra's glare deepened. The figure stood up taking off his hood showing that it was in fact the young alchemist. Once their theories were proved correct everyone jumped into action. Cass getting her sword at the ready, Eugene blocking Raps from varian and lance putting up his fists, unsure of what else he could do. Varian our bus hands up in the air and took a step back. "Please, im not going to hurt anyone any more. I promise." Rapunzel put a hand on Eugene's shoulder to let him know it was okay. She examined varian, he was slimmer than the last time they met face to face, paler too. He had bags under his eyes and his expression no longer showed any anger, nor did it show the once child like hope and wonder. His eyes were now dull and filled with sadness and regret. Rapunzel made her way around Eugene and asked him "Varian. Why did you save us?" The boy looked at Rapunzel his facial expression not changing "i don't know, i guess after everything i did, and everything i put you through, the least i could do was get you out of a tough situation." He looked almost embarrassed, not making eye contact with anyone in the group. Everyone got out of a fighting position. He regretted what he did, he was sorry. Cass started to rethink her harsh actions towards the kid and Eugene thought about what must've happened to lead to this point. They had thrown a child in jail with very dangerous people. He might have been hurt or scarred. It was obvious to everyone in the group that the boy had been broken down, but none of them could tell if it was during his time in prison or during the 3 months in between the storm and the battle of old corona. Rapunzel rested a hand on varian's shoulder startling him. He looked at her, this time making eye contact. "I forgive you varian." She said it softly, almost as a whisper but no matter how she said it, it didn't change the meaning to varian. Rapunzel, the girl he had hurt and betrayed, the daughter of the woman he kidnapped, forgave him. Before he could stop it, he felt tears rush to his eyes and slowly fall down his cheeks. When Rapunzel saw this she smiled and pulled him in, knowing he had accepted it. Everyone else in the group,
being lead by Eugene, walked to the two and joined in the hug. And for the very first time in almost a year and a half, being surrounded by all his friends who he had thought had given up on him, varian smiled, a true genuine smile.
