TW: MENTION OF SELF HARM

It had been a shock when she had found out, but as contradictory as it was, she expected his parents to burden him with this type of endeavor.

They had been in the common room that night, when Draco's hands were shaky and he seemed like his mind was in a place miles away from where they were seated on the plush satin sofa in a study session.

"Draco?" she had snapped her fingers in front of his face in annoyance. "I'm not just here to give you the answers."

"Sorry," mumbled the boy, looking back down at his papers. "Got distracted."

"What's with you lately?" she had asked him, genuinely curious. "You've been sort of acting like a dick." His fists balled up, and in a moment of weakness and/or anger, he broke into pieces right in front of her.

"Give me a break, Y/N!" exploded Draco, earning a look of bewilderment from the girl. "You don't know what I'm going through right now! I'm sorry that I'm not all peachy keen all the fucking time, but while you're trying to pass these stupid exams, I have to- I have to-"

Without finishing his statement, he had broken down into tears, falling in a heap on the couch. Y/N regarded him with a face of confusion; she was only joking, and she'd never seen him act like this.

"Baby," soothed Y/N. She ran a hand over his back in gentle circles. "I-I...I'm sorry, I was kidding, I didn't mean to make you upset."

Angry tears raced down his pale cheeks, being wiped away as soon as they had fallen. He looked back up at her, speechless, before falling into her arms to which she gladly held him close.

"What were you saying?" the girl had softly inquired. "You have to what?"

"I can't tell you." he had mumbled into her chest.

"Draco, you can tell me anything-"

"Fine, Y/N." snapped Draco after he had wiped away a stray tear. "I do trust you with my own life, so I guess it's only fitting. But, it's a bit of a shock, so.. so you have to promise not to tell anyone.."

Since that night a few weeks back, Y/N had replayed the memory over and over again in her head. It pained her to think that her boy was being forced to do something so awful—something so heinous. Her attempts at coercing him into abandoning the plan or telling someone were quickly squashed by Draco, who had informed her that his father would rather slit Draco's wrists than let him back down from the mission. The sad reality of it is that his figurative speech wasn't far from the truth.

She had taken notice to his frequent absences throughout the weeks, and had questioned him about where he had been. He had never let her on to whatever he was doing, or constructed a weak excuse that even a pygmy puff could have probably seen straight through. His weary attitude had made her extremely uneasy, especially now as she felt the date for Dumbledore's assassination growing closer.

"Draco." she had pleaded. "Tell Dumbledore... he'll... he'll protect you and your family, just let him know, it's not a good idea-"

"Don't you understand?!" his outbursts were nothing of a surprise anymore, she hadn't flinched. "You-know-who's a dark fucking wizard! He will kill my family if I don't do it, he will! Dumbledore doesn't care about me, it's all about Potter to him!"

She has tried to stop mentioning it, but his sunken eyes were too on-topic for her to ignore. Having the man he was supposed to assassinate as their headmaster certainly didn't make any of it easy to forget as well. She longed for the old Draco, who, although had a history of being an arse to many, was a complete sweetheart to her. She had changed his mind on most muggle related subjects, her being a muggleborn herself. His mean facade designed for his peers—especially Gryffindors— had slowly began to fade, but all of this development had seemed to be undone when this task was given to him. He had drawn back from everything: his school work, quidditch, prefect duties, and her. Y/N's worrying had only gotten worse.
