I run.

As fast as I can.

All I can hear is the gravel crunching under my feet, as they slam against it. I feel my heart pounding in my chest, I can hear myself breathing heavy, and the ringing in my ears. But the only thing I can think about is getting out of there. Out of here. Now.

I glance behind me but I don't see anything, but I keep running anyway, the burning in my legs only making me go faster. My adrenaline picks up along with my speed.

Soon I start to hear voices and yelling in the background but I don't care, I need to get out. I need to keep going.

So I do.

I see a road up ahead and I stop at the edge of it, resting my hands on my knees, and pausing to breath. A car comes around the bend and I stick my hand out and start waving it like a maniac. The driver stops and pulls over, "You need a ride?" She asks. "Yes." I manage, she nods her head and I climb in her car breathing heavy. "Where to?" She asks. "Far. Very far." I whisper staring out the window. "I'm heading to Grand Marais, is that far enough?" She asks, I nod in response, and she says nothing else which I am grateful for.
